These are presently two of the best retail netbooks in the market. In fact, they have been best venders for rather a long time now. If you are in the market buying goods around for a netbook, it may prove to be a difficult task to choose amongst these two.

There are significant divergences among the Asus 1005HA and the Acer Aspire One when it comes to specs. To put it merely the Asus 1005HA netbook has more powerful specs. In fact it in all likelihood have the best set of specs that a netbook may have. The Asus model is powered by a 1.66Ghz processor, has 802.11b/g/n wi-fi connectivity and is likewise Bluetooth 2.1 ready. It likewise has a 10.1-inch LED back-lit screen that has a 1024 x 600 resolution.

As for the Acer Aspire One netbook, I would say that it is biggest distinction lies in it is design and pricing. Whether it is in terms of performance, specs or functionality, it comes up a little short of those on the Asus netbook. The Acer model nevertheless has a modes price tag, costing in regards to $294 each. That’s in regards to $30-$40 for less than the Asus model. Many also seem to be taken with the design of the Acer netbook.

Another necessary thing to note is the battery life span of these two models. The Acer model may last up to 6.5 hours on one charge while the Asus may last up to 10.5 hours. With all taken into consideration, I personally feel that the Asus 1005HA netbook is a much better buy than the Acer mode. Nevertheless, if you just love the design of the Acer Aspire One or if you are actually on a tight budget, it may prove to be a better buy.

Most helpful customer reviews

183 of 186 people found the following review helpful.
Great Laptop, good enough keyboard
By Supamonkey
I’ve been using this Asus Netbook for about a month now, so I thought I’d give my initial impression of this device to help future buyers make a informed decision.
First of buying a netbook was not my first choice, as I already have a 17″ Toshiba laptop. However recently a friend/fellow grad student of mine purchased an Ipad and was showing it off. Out of jealousy I decided to get a tablet as well, but after reading about them online, got diverted to purchasing a netbook instead. I wanted a mobile computing device(since I walk or bike to school, mall, downtown etc, and a 17″ laptop is just too heavy) on which to check mail do minor document editing, maybe play a game or too. For these reasons a netbook seemed a nicer, more productive alternative than a tablet. Now that you know the reason I bought this let me get to the pros and cons of the Asus netbook.

Pros
1. Its light and small. I had a HP mini back in 2008(which I gave to my sister) and it was at least 35 percent more weighty. The Asus could even fit in my jacket pocket. I feel that it is much easier and less delicate to carry than a tablet.
2. Asus Brand name. Asus is the most reliable company when it comes to making laptops. It even tops Apple in reliability(really! google it), even though all laptops seem to be made by Foxxcon(?).
3. I installed Ubuntu Linux Distro on it and everything worked without any additional work.
4.The battery life. Currently I can squeeze anywhere between 3 to 4 hours out of the battery. However this will go down as the battery ages.
5. Colors. I like the color choices that come with netbook. I went for the blue one.
6. The hardware seems to be robust. I’ve watched movies online, while editing office documents and having 7-10 tabs open in firefox and the laptop worked great. However I’m looking to upgrade the total RAM to at least 2GB.

There were also things that I did not like about the netbook.

Cons
1. The Keyboard. They call it the Chiclet keyboard and I feel it is quite small, even for a netbook of this size. As I mentioned earlier I had a HP mini before and it has a much better, roomier Keyboard than this one. The keys also make a “springy” sound that I don’t like. It reminds me somehow of the old IBM keyboards. It is difficult but eventually one gets used to typing on this netbook.
2. Windows 7. The windows is the one really bad addition to this netbook. Don’t get me wrong, I love windows 7, just don’t like the version installed here. With just 1 GB of RAM, windows starts to get sluggish very fast as opposed to Ubuntu. If you are going to use this, I suggest you buy additional RAM to run Windows 7 (even starter) on this machine or do as I did, install a Linux Distro.
3. The power plug. I feel that the power plug and outlet in the netbook are just too fragile and would snap with just a little stress. And since I use this device on my lap and when I’m in bed also, I feel I have to be careful to avoid bending the power plug.
4. Audio input/output. The audio input and output are through the same hole. So I am unable to use my mic whenever I need to skype. And the internal mic is too weak, so that I have to hold the netbook screen next to my face to talk. Will have to purchase a mic/earphone in one combo thing.

I hope this will help the reader make a better decision on their purchase. Will update this review after a year.

100 of 108 people found the following review helpful.
Great Little Puter!
By F. Howard
Okay, so I have only had this computer for like a week so not a whole lot I can say right now. I got it out of the package (which arrived within three days of ordering) and yes it is small, but cute. VERY light, like the size of a Stephen King novel and very portable too. Anyways, setup was simple, took about 10 minutes for the OS to install and boot for the first time. It found my WiFi immediately and I just had to enter the password to connect. Very easy to install programs, but I only installed Firefox and Advanced System Care at this point. Comes with Word but it is the starter edition, which is basic functionality of word. I freelance write so the basic Word is good for me.

It seems to work like a charm, the webcam is nice and pretty good quality for a .3 MP. Took a couple pictures and they came out looking pretty good. The battery life is pretty good I am ranging about 3 hours to 3 1/2 hours, which is better than the 20 minutes I was getting on my previous but still useable computer. Screen size is just right for me since I am just using this computer for writing and emails and such. I have my bigger laptop for movies and other videos. I am keeping this one relatively clean and not installing much at this point.

Really nice overall, I can’t complain too much except the background can’t change on Starter OS. I choose to use Starter then maybe I will upgrade later on but really no need right now. I can live with the blue screen as the background. Typing is really easy, especially if you are used to smaller and more compact keyboards. Not a big fan of the touch pad so I hooked up my mouse. Plugged it in and it recognized it right away.

Definitely a must-buy for anyone looking for something small and portable but with good programs. Also the sound is actually better than the Toshiba Satellite that my BF has which is kinda cool. Headphones are always better though for smaller laptops. Totally glad I bought this one and hope it will last me a long time. Been wanting an Asus for a few years now and it seems to be as great as advertised.

Also, since it does not have a DVD/CD drive, I just imported files and programs from a flash drive onto this computer. Worked just as well and was pretty easy. So again, something I don’t need at this point but if I need it then I will buy it later.

As soon as the computer boots, get rid of the bloatware. Go to start > control panel > uninstall programs, to remove bloatware. The Trend antivirus is the most annoying, throwing up a nag screen every 2 minutes. Next most annoying is Bing, a Microsoft browser toolbar. Be sure to uninstall Bing before installing Firefox to avoid Bing parasitizing Firefox. On the control panel uninstall page there is a turn off features option. Use the turn off features option to remove additional Windows baggage.

Program updaters slow the computer. At the default settings the updaters run in the background and check for updates, download, and install continuously. Adobe, Asus, and Microsoft are the primary offenders. Asus updaters are notorious for crashing computers. The Microsoft updater had the bad habit of trying to update programs I had already uninstalled. Updaters are marketed as a convenience, but have similar properties to spyware.

To improve performance turn off the updaters, or remove them through control panel. I removed almost every program with “update”, “Microsoft”, “Asus”, and “Adobe” in the title. That ended the periodic freezes.

Memory is cheap. From a cost/benefit standpoint a memory upgrade is almost mandatory. I upgraded to 2gb ram using the Crucial chip, 2GB 204-PIN Sodimm DDR3. Memory is easily accessed through a hatch on the bottom of the computer. After I put in the 2gb chip I entered bios (push F2 during boot) and verified that I now had 2048 meg (2048meg=2gb) of memory installed. Extra ram pays off with more speed, more multitasking, and less wear on the hard drive. You can also usually recycle a big ram chip into your next computer. Unfortunately Win 7 starter is hobbled by limiting multitasking, so the full benefit of added memory is only realized with an operating system upgrade.

I tried a couple different 4gb chips. The computer wouldn’t POST (boot) with 4gb ram installed. Apparently, 2gb is the max recognized by bios.

In response to a question, I have explained memory replacement in the comments, and posted images to illustrate the process. Also in comments there is a discussion of various memory types suitable for this computer. The memory I bought is not the cheapest that works.

It is also possible to upgrade the hard drive, but it is not as simple as the ram upgrade. Replacing the hard drive involves removing the keyboard, splitting the case, and going through two zif connectors. I do not recommend attempting a hard drive upgrade unless you have experience assembling computers. The stock 250gb is adequate for a netbook, but only 230gb is available because of the recovery partition.

An additional performance boost can be achieved cheaply and easily by inserting a 4gb SD card into the card reader and dedicating the card to ReadyBoost cache. After inserting a blank SD card, the option of “use to speed up computer” should pop up. If not, use the “file>properties” drop down menu of file explorer to find the “dedicate to ReadyBoostCache” option for the SD card. I used a Transcend 4 GB Class 10 SDHC Flash Memory Card TS4GSDHC10E. Use the fastest SD card you can afford to get the most improvement.

This computer is an excellent Linux platform. I booted Linux Ubuntu 11.10 and Mint 12 from the internal hard drive, an external hard drive on a usb port, and from the card reader. Linux recognized all the hardware, including the camera. Connecting to the net was quick and easy. DVD videos played smoothly in Linux Mint. Everything was faster, and wallpaper could be changed.

If you want to try Linux and preserve the recovery partition, you have a couple options. The first is to install Linux alongside Windows. After installing Linux alongside Windows, the Linux boot menu will list Windows, Linux, or the recovery partition as boot options. If you don’t want to make any changes to the hard drive, install Linux onto an SD card. The SD card should be at least 8gb. Once the SD card has Linux installed, you can boot from the SD card into Linux, or from the hard drive into Windows.

Booting from the card reader is easy. You can choose the card reader as a boot device by pushing esc during boot or by entering bios. To enter bios, push F2 during boot. In bios the card reader is listed as a hard drive. Go to bios > boot > hard drives and select memory card reader as the primary hard drive.

The wifi card is good, picking up more transmitters than my other netbook.

DVD playback was crippled in 7 starter. In Windows, I installed the free K-lite codec pack to play dvds. The n455 chip has much better video performance than the n280 in my 1005. DVDs play smooth (video only tested with 2gb memory). I used a single tail drive to play DVDs and install Linux: Liteon ETAU208-96 Top Load DVD/CD Writer Black.

The touch pad is overly sensitive, making typing difficult. I always turn off the touch pad (Fn-F3) and use an external optical mouse.

Cost cutting is apparent in some features. There is 15 pin vga out, but no hdmi. There is only one jack for both headphones and microphone. There is only one tinny sounding speaker on the underside right front. There are only 2 usb ports, one on each side. The small stock 2200 mAh battery only lasts 3 hours.

I need my netbook to last through long plane rides and a shift at work. I replaced the stock battery with the 5800 mAh battery from my old 1005 and get about 10 hours of service. I also bought a 6600mAh Anker, Anker New Laptop Battery for ASUS EEE 1001HA 1101HA 1001P 1005PE 1001 1005HAB 1005HA 1005 [Li-ion 9-cell 6600mAh]. The Anker battery gives 12 hours service, but adds weight and thickness to the computer.

Backup of the recovery partition is poorly documented. Press F9 during boot to get the screen with “recover” and “backup” as options (see posted picture). The backup media must be at least 16gb. I backed up to a 16gb memory card and to a small hard drive on a usb port.

This low priced little computer has great potential. Out of the box performance is hampered by lack of memory and bloatware that hogs resources at default settings. Windows 7 starter also prevents the hardware from reaching full potential by limiting multitasking and video performance. To get the most out of this computer upgrade memory, aggressively prune installed programs, and consider changing the operating system.

So you need a new TV. But what kind of TV do you want? There are so a great deal of TV choices these days, that selecting the proper TV may be a hassle. Plasma, LCD, LED…which one must you choose? In this article we talk about each dissimilar type of TV, including the vantages and disfavors of owning each type. With this information, you will be capable to make an easy decision when choosing what kind of TV you want.

LCD TVs

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. Because of the advent of LED, LCD is now starting to drop off in price. LCD was all the rage when it came out numerous years ago, and was very expensive. Now you may buy a nice size LCD for a good price. The vantages of LCD are as follows: – Very clear picture. LCD also has a longer life then plasma, in most cases. LCD looks better for high definition gaming, as well as blue-ray movies. Plasma is for less then LCD, but LCD looks better. – LCD is just as easy to smash as plasma if dropped. – LCD TVs will keep coming down in price while LED gains favor.

Plasma TVs

A plasma TV is now exceedingly cheap. However, there are some less favorable advantages to using plasma. This is principally due to the gloss or haze that in general appears on the screen; you have to block the sun out of the room you put the plasma into or you can’t look at it. – Plasma is cheap now, but not ranked to last as long as LCD. Plasma’s power regulation isn’t as good as LCD. Some users have used their plasma for years just to unplug it one day and not have it turn back on. – A plasma TV may or may not have a good warranty on it. LCD TVs may be warranted to last at least 5 years. Plasma TVs are commonly warranted to last less then that. So if you’re going to dump cash into a plasma, get a good warranty. 5 years is good, 10 years is great, and 15 years or more is awesome. – The gloss on the screen annoys some and stops others from buying. This is most noticeable in a sunny room. For this reason, you’ll want to place your plasma into a room where there is not a lot of sun on it.

LED TVs

LED is a brand new technology. Right now, it’s very expensive. The picture quality is supposed to be a lot better, because each LED TV is built of millions of tiny LEDs. – LED is actually new, and we’re not too intimate with it. But what would take place if a few of the millions of LEDs were to go out? These are good questions to ask when purchasing an LED TV. – LED is actually expensive. Make sure to get a good warranty to protect your investment. You might spend 1 or 2 thousand on a plasma or LCD TV, but you’ll spend 5 thousand on an LED Tv at the time of this writing.

TV Warranty

When purchasing a TV, it’s necessary the TV comes with a good warranty. Some TVs come with a 3 year warranty, galore come with a 5 year warranty. A plasma TV will come with a dissimilar warranty amount of time then an LCD TV, as will an LED. The major thing is being competent to recognize the dissimilar kind of warranties, and what they cover. Below we will make an analyzation of this.

In-store warranty

Usually when purchasing a TV, it will come with an in-store warranty for a fixed time. This in-store warranty amount of time is three months for most stores. Some stores trade an extended in-store warranty period. These are the best warranties to have sometimes. This is because if your TV breaks down after the in-store warranty period, it has to be shipped off to the manufacturer to be repaired. This may be time consuming and frustrating. We will talk about why below, under manufacturer warranty. An in-store warranty for your TV is great. If the extended in store-option is offered, take it over the manufacturer option.

Manufacturer warranty

Most warranties after the three month to a year amount of time default to a manufacturer’s warranty. These you ought to be careful of when purchasing a TV. Be sure to read the fine print if purchasing an extended warranty. The fine print is where persons always get screwed. For instance, Staples has a clause in their extended contract for laptop warranties that says if the work costs more then the cost of the unit, that the client may be entitled to receive a gift certificate. This happened to somebody I recognise and she received a gift certificate for less then half the cost of the laptop. These clauses from time to time likewise refer to how electronics are worth less cash after leaving the store. Be very careful to read all the fine print in the extended service plan you get. Sometimes the extended service plans are just a rip off and covered in fine print. Avoid these.

Ferraioli
Being someone that is skeptical about warranties I took a chance and purchsed a warranty with squaretrade on my LCD TV, after it developed blue lines in it I contacted Squaretrade and was refunded in full immediately, I since purchased several of thier warranties including one on my larger replacement LCD TV, with a string of bad luck that TV went black on me, I again contacted squaretrade and was so impressed with their service and speed. They reviewed my claim, asked me some basic questions and determined that a full refund was the easiest solution, I had this TV for over two years at the time of the claim. I’m not a big warranty person, as most experts will say aftermarket warranties are not worth it, but this company has changed my outlook, the cost of the warranties I purchased for all my items were so minimal and the service was incredible and hassle free, you would have more of a problem if you tried to return something to a store than with squaretrade. I highly recommend you pick up one of squaretrades warranties for any device, large or small. I can say it is WELL worth the small amount they charge.

I can say that it’s nice to go to their website to check the status on the warranty. I noticed you can file a claim from the site, and complete other maintenance tasks. We’ll see how it goes!

So you need a new TV. But what kind of TV do you want? There are so a lot of TV choices these days, that selecting the proper TV may be a hassle. Plasma, LCD, LED…which one must you choose? In this article we talk about each dissimilar type of TV, including the vantages and disfavors of owning each type. With this information, you will be competent to make an easy decision when choosing what kind of TV you want.

LCD TVs

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. Because of the advent of LED, LCD is now starting to drop off in price. LCD was all the rage when it came out a good deal of years ago, and was very expensive. Now you may buy a nice size LCD for a good price. The vantages of LCD are as follows: – Very clear picture. LCD likewise has a longer life then plasma, in most cases.

However, there are a heap of disfavors to using plasma. This is primarily due to the gloss or haze that in general appears on the screen; you have to block the sun out of the room you put the plasma into or you can’t look at it. – Plasma is cheap now, but not rated to last as long as LCD. Plasma’s power regulation isn’t as good as LCD. Some users have employed their plasma for years just to unplug it one day and not have it turn back on. – A plasma TV may or may not have a good warranty on it. LCD TVs may be warranted to last at least 5 years. Plasma TVs are normally warranted to last less then that. So if you’re going to dump cash into a plasma, get a good warranty. 5 years is good, 10 years is great, and 15 years or more is awesome. – The gloss on the screen annoys a great deal of and stops others from buying.

– LED is in truth new, and we’re not too intimate with it. But what would occur if a few of the millions of LEDs were to go out? These are good questions to ask when purchasing an LED TV. – LED is in truth expensive. Make sure to get a good warranty to protect your investment. You might spend 1 or 2 thousand on a plasma or LCD TV, but you’ll spend 5 thousand on an LED Tv at the time of this writing.

TV Warranty

When purchasing a TV, it’s important the TV comes with a good warranty. Some TVs come with a 3 year warranty, a great deal of come with a 5 year warranty. A plasma TV will come with a dissimilar warranty amount of time then an LCD TV, as will an LED. The major thing is being capable to recognize the dissimilar kind of warranties, and what they cover.

These you must be careful of when purchasing a TV. Be sure to read the fine print if purchasing an extended warranty. The fine print is where humans always get screwed. For instance, Staples has a clause in their extended contract for laptop warranties that says if the work costs more then the cost of the unit, that the client may be entitled to receive a gift certificate. This happened to an individual I recognise and she received a gift certificate for less then half the cost of the laptop. These clauses once in a while also refer to how electronics are worth less cash after leaving the store. Be very careful to read all the fine print in the extended service plan you get. Sometimes the extended service plans are just a rip off and covered in fine print. Avoid these.

I was a bit nervous, since I’ve only used Best Buy’s warranty service and never had tried a mail-in service before, but the difference in price was significant enough to take a chance with it.

I just filed a claim with Square Trade and received astoundingly good service. None of the nonsense that I’m used to from Geek Squad- e.g., waiting for hours at the Best Buy service counter for someone to pay attention to me, then being told the issue isn’t covered, or it’ll cost extra, it’ll take 2-6 weeks to send the unit out for service, etc.

None of that crap when I dealt with Square Trade. To the contrary, I received INSTANT help, yes it’s fully covered, INSTANT e-mail labels for the return, great response.

I’ll never use Geek Squad again. I’m a Square Trade fan now. Seriously- these guys are the best.

Had to cash in on 2 of them since one was ipod and it cratered, and other was laptop and it died too. Square Trade first of all has the best priced warranties ( I dare you to compare to Best Buy and other places where you pay well over 100/200 for laptops) and these warranties are straight forward and without gimmicks. In both cases, my items were not repairable and they determined it pretty quickly and gave me the money for replacement and I am happy about that. No hassles, no arguments about value or how damage occurred, etc. Just straight across the board, you give them your side, they review the item and voila! presto, you are give the amount you insured. Now that is the right way to do business, since lets face it, when you are not able to use your ipod or laptop, you want to get back into gear as soon as possible and not have to wait for weeks, with Square Trade you can be up and running pretty quickly. Unfortunately they are no longer selling them in certain states, and my state is one of them, otherwise, I would keep on buying them again and again. If you are fortunate to live in states where they do sell, then definitely avail yourself of their warranties, you will be glad you did.

The first one was on a laptop I purchased several months ago. Only days after I received the laptop from Amazon, I spilled a drink all over the keyboard. One call to SquareTrade and I had a UPS shipping label to send the broken computer to them. Less than two weeks later, the money for the computer (minus the $50 deductible) was deposited into my account. They are fast and their customer service agents are polite and knowledgeable. This is the only company I’ll ever use for warranties.
