Its tough but its not great *Updated March 7, 2011

I have owned many Olympus cameras in the past but this is my first camera I have purchased from their “tough” line. As advertised this thing looks and feels very sturdy. The seals on it look like they will hold out any kind of moisture and dust and the lens has its own protective shroud and cover to protect it from scratches or damage. The lens also does not extend or retract so dust, sand, and dirt cant jam it up (which is a problem I have had before). It also has a minimum of buttons to break or stick and it has a very soild body construction. So on a toughness scale of 1-10 the Stylus tough 8010 gets an 11. This camera really is in a class of its own on when it comes to durablity, and it is the only camera I have seen my colleagues take with them into combat zones.

Great easy to use sturdy camera!

I love swimming off the island – dive boats park nearby. This was also the trial run for my Olympus Tough-8010 camera and since I watched YouTube videos before deciding to purchase it, I thought it was important to post a video, mentioning how satisfied I am with the camera. Natural lighting and conditions had the most significant impacts on pictures – pretty much, what I saw, is what I got in video and still photos. The underwater scene selection was a time saver as is the handy 1 click video button. The only problem I had was probably unavoidable – underwater I could not see the picture preview at all – not enough light, I suppose -so I was forced to point and hope that I was taking the picture as intended. Very satisfied with the camera overall!!!

Completely Disappointed with Functionality

Do not assume that I am biased or jaded, my score is based upon real-world usage of this camera. I own the Olympus Stylus 1030SW and have been very happy with its performance as a all-around point-and-shoot as well as an underwater camera, so I was thrilled to see the 8010 come out as the upgrade with higher resolution, better zoom and deeper capabilities. I pre-ordered the 8010 and it arrived just days before we left on our cruise which enabled me to do some real-world validation. I was sorely wishing I had brought my 1030SW as I was trying to capture images on the trip.

The Good:
The overall exterior design is great on the 8010. I really liked the new double-lock on the battery / memory compartment. Kudos for moving to the standard SD format as well. The new 720 video resolution is nice as well. It still feels like it drops a frame or two every so often at 720, but it is very good quality for the optics. The camera performs well underwater with good vibrant images.

The Bad:
The software running this camera is the complete downfall. The menu and selections are very sluggish, going from option to option you have to deliberately think ‘go slow’ or you will find yourself very frustrated. I am not sure what Olympus did with the white-balance of this camera but its functionality lies somewhere between ‘completely broken’ and ‘completely frustrated’. I could take several pictures of individuals on the beach and one image would be completely blown out like a whiteout and the next image would look like it was a completely dark overcast day. I tried several times to change the settings to compensate for this, and I found that if I angled the camera around enough I could almost get the picture I wanted. The trouble was that for nearly every shot I was taking a picture, then tweaking the settings several times and have to adjust where I am pointing to try and get the image to come out partially descent. I have never had to manipulate a camera so much – EVER. All the while my daughter standing next to me would snap the same shot with her $95 Nikon and it would look great. It also appears that the flash is much less powerful, typically when the individual in the image is too dark, with a lighter background, I would change the settings to force the flash, but with this camera it hardly made a dent. Also on several of the videos take at the beach it was almost as though the sensor was overloaded as I would get a bright white / pink streak on the video as we were shooting on a bright day.

When I returned from my trip, I saw the great reviews here on Amazon and figured i must have bought a defective one so I called Olympus. I received no satisfaction from them, so I ultimately returned it to Amazon. I then purchased a 2nd one to see if truly my original was defective and found the exact same results and as such I have returned the 2nd camera as well. Thank goodness for Amazon’s fantastic return policy. I am now using my 1030SW and looking to see what is the real solution for the next upgrade from that camera.

The Inkjet Combo Pack is what I needed for my printer. There is nothing stellar about it. It gets the job done, and well. The quality of the prints are crisp and clean. I have not had any problems with the cartridges on my printer. Also, the combo pack is a better deal than if purchasing the individual cartridges. So I recommend it.

Is this lens as bad as some people say it is?

No it’s not especially if you take into account its intended users. If you use a Canon digital SLR and are satisfied with the kit lens (18-55) then buying this lens can be the perfect next step for you. Practically speaking, you will be able to increase your zoom reach to the point where you can A) photograph birds in moderately distant trees, B) be able to zoom in on the other side of a valley and frame something of your interest. Those are just two examples. One thing you will NOT be able to do effectively with this lens, however, is to take sport shots with it. How so? Consider some of the following weakness:

*At 300mm zoom range the highest aperture is limited to 5.6 (You will have to use very slow shutter speed to snap fast action shots; remember the inverse relation between aperture and shutter speed.)
*The lens size/weight combination makes it hard to hold steady when attached to a camera like the Rebel XT
*Slow and often inaccurate auto focus (I just don’t understand why Canon makes a USM version of this lens for $20 more, but never includes it in the triple rebate program)
*Chromatic aberration is significant in high contrast lighting like in full sun (if you do not know what Chromatic aberration means search the term online or check out my review of the Canon 28mm 2.8 on Amazon, but to summarize, it would be a discoloration at the fringes of objects in your picture)

Those kinds of weakness will limit your ability to use this lens in all sorts of other situations/circumstances. As a practical rule to follow, if the lighting is less than ideal this lens will give you a hard time. Meaning, it will be possible to use it, but you may get too many blurry images because of shake from slow shutter speeds. As for what are ideal lighting conditions? That would be full sun with few or no clouds and with the light bathing your subject/object from the front or the side.

So is this lens that bad? Not really, as with many other lenses, when the lens is coupled with a good camera it still out performs most Point and Shoot cameras. Plus it provides results at par or slightly below the kit lens (18-55). So if you are satisfied with your kit lens, which provides you with a zoom range comparable to 3X zoom (55/18= 3), why not add another lens that will expand your zoom range by another 4X (300/75=4)? Nothing wrong with expanding your horizon!

PS. TWO MORE POINTS ABOUT USING THIS LENS: First, if you’re confident you can handhold this lens at slow shutter speeds (I know I can’t) then the low maximum aperture shouldn’t be a major problem. Second, if you’re fine shooting at high ISO (more like 400 or 800) then again the low maximum aperture shouldn’t be a problem. The nice thing about photography is that you can do one thing in so many ways, so don’t be afraid to explore with this lens!

Could be better, but works well within its price range

After reading several online reviews of the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM lens, I had nearly talked myself out of even looking at one. However, thanks to a local Canon demonstration, I was able to play with several lenses, the 75-300mm f/4-5.6 among them. I got to try it out alongside the IS version (which costs just under 3x as much), the non-USM version, and some of their L-series professional lenses.

That said, I found there to be less difference among the directly-comparable lenses (the non-USM, USM, and IS versions) than I’d have thought. On the test shots I took using a Canon Digital Rebel XT, I didn’t find full-zoom telephoto shots to be appreciably softer in the non-IS version reviewed herein, nor were the images overly soft for my liking period.

The USM focusing didn’t seem to make as much of a difference as I’d expected over the non-USM model, either. Focusing was still relatively slow (as other reviewers have pointed out), although once an initial focus has been made, adjustments aren’t too slow unless changing to a subject substantially nearer or farther away. HOWEVER, the AF engine did make a number of “mistakes” when using this lens that it did not using the IS lens (or, of course, the L-series glass); more than once I had to either switch to manual focus or try multiple times to get the right focus “lock.” Furthermore, the USM model doesn’t get you internal focus, either, like with higher-end lenses, so the end still rotates during focusing, which can be problematic with a circular polarizer or other filters.

Overall, I’d say that you “get what you pay for”; this is a very inexpensive lens, and it shows in some areas. But it’s not nearly as bad as some would make it out to be. I tried it out both on several indoors shots under less-than-ideal lighting conditions and was pleased in most respects, and outdoors, I got very good results on even moving subjects.

Pros:
– Cost; at under $200, you would be hard-pressed to find a lens with the same reach with even half-decent optics.

Cons:
– Slow focus
– Autofocus seems to confuse somewhat easily over the IS model
– The USM version is still not an internally-focusing model, and thus the end of the lens will still rotate (and can affect filters, etc.)

I’d recommend the IS version if you have the extra funds, but if you are on a budget and just can’t wait, I saw less of a difference than others have between the two. Of course, the real step up would be to a comparable piece of glass in the L series, but with it comes a real step up in price, too.

Buy the “IS” version instead

If you’re looking at this lens, you’re more demanding than the average Joe who takes photos and have high expectations. This lens is not blazingly fast (f/5.6 at 300mm), and to reliably freeze camera shake, you’re going to need a 1/500 sec shutter speed, which means that with ISO 100 film, you only can lose one stop of illumination under “Sunny 16″ conditions before you have to decide comprimise somewhere to get your shot.
Consequently, shots into the shade, or conducted under the warmer and softer lighting conditions of the morning/evening will inevitably drive you to the comprimise of a high ISO grainy film or the bulk of a tripod to make up for this lens’s lack of optical speed. If you always shoot in full noon sunshine, you’ll be okay.
Even though its a great tool, most people don’t like to carry a tripod, so the solution is to either accept grain in enlargements, not take certain photos, spend more money to go to a faster lens, or some combination of the above. I’ll say it again: the most cost-effective alternative is to use a tripod. The next cost-effective alternative is Canon’s “IS” (Image Stabilization) lens technology. There are two contenders in this focal length, the 75-300mm IS and the 100-400mm IS. The former is nearly a duplicate of this lens…. The latter is a 3 lb pro lens…. Of these two, the 75-300mm IS is the bargain.
I started with this lens and after just a few test rolls, returned it and got the 75-300mm IS. The IS technology reliably affords an additional effective two stops of speed, although it cannot be used to freeze subject motion as the shutter will normally also do. But it makes the use of high quality films, such as Fuji Velvia (ISO 50), Kodachrome 64 and even Ekta (Kodak Royal Gold) ISO 25 feasible. -hh

Make sure you can read it.

Standard SD and SDHC cards look identical in size and shape, only SDHC-compatible products will be able to accept the new SDHC cards. SanDisk differentiates its new cards with the new SDHC logo on the card and retail package.

Now my web research finds that at the time of its release Wes Brewer, vice president of consumer product marketing at SanDisk, said, “In order to provide the easiest and most compatible solution for 4GB and larger capacity SDHC cards in the market, SanDisk chose to bundle its new MicroMate USB 2.0 SD/SDHC compatible card reader, which normally retails for $19.99, with this new card.”

Note this deal does not include a reader.

In my case the device I bought it for can read it. Without the dedicated reader my year old HP computer cannot .

This is a must for loading music to listen to on my Palm TX. But BEWARE of eek Technoligies and buying at this price. They wanted $13.20 for shipping a 2 oz memory card? Buy from someone else even if it is a few dollars more and pay reasonable shipping rates. Don’t be fooled by their cheap price they make it up 2x in shippoing charges. When I saw it I cancelled my order..

expensive SHIPPING!

I played around with the prices on this and found out several things. If I order this item, $11 in shipping costs is added by the third party supplier! If I get the 2G version, even two of them, those qualify for free shipping from Amazon and come out much cheaper. So check your prices on these before ordering. My hunch is that you can probably pick this 4G up cheaper at your local electronics/computer store…

Still one of the best shows on TV!

Of course, I don’t own the third season on DVD so I cannot say what the special features include or how well they worked, but I did watch the entire 3rd Season when it was on television and, true to form, it remains one of the best shows on television. The characters all work really well together and the stellar “family” trio of David Krumholtz, Rob Morrow, and Judd Hirsch again work their magic in this well-written and well-acted third season. As much as this show is about the FBI or mathematics (and the great connection the two can have in common), it also is about family, in the literal sense but also in regards to people you work with. Ultimately, you care about these characters (especially if you have seen the other two seasons, but isn’t required) and the differences their jobs and their lives create between them. The subject matter is heavy at times (and not recommended for children) but some of the other “heavy” episodes aren’t anything they aren’t already exposed so could make this show fresh by its bringing mathematics away from just geeks and making it interesting for all kinds of people.

Allows you to “take a chance” with electronics

One thing I think is great about SquareTrade warranties is they allow you to try out brands that may not have the best reliability but have good features and price, get a warranty and if it breaks you are covered;-) I have been very pleased with SquareTrade’s warranty prices and they were great the one time I did need to “cash in”.

Great Warranty!!

This was the easiest warranty. I bought the drops and spills warranty with my new camera because I tend to break things a lot. Sure enough I broke my camera within a month of getting it. Square Trade sent me the money for my new camera + a 10% bonus because I decided to get payed out with an amazon gift card. That way I just went online and could buy any new camera I wanted (didn’t have to be sent the exact same camera). Very very easy and quick turn around time!

Individual cartridges are not a new phenomenon to hit the printing

world; in fact, they have been around for years.

HP was one of the initial companies to have distinguished color cartridges

for their printers, such as the early Designjet series and wide format

printers. This system worked well but required a big printer to

hold the cartridges, that were big in comparison to what are applied

today.

Although HP has continued to manufacture this type of printer, they

have been traditionally best suitable for special apps or heavy

printing. Individual ink cartridges were not to be found as an option

in personal inkjet printers until 2001. Epson came out with the C80,

and with regards to the same time Canon came out with printers like the BJC-

3000 series.

This new, distinguished color ink cartridge system was a real innovation

for little offices and home use. The printer’s footprint was

equivalent to other contemporary 2-cartridge printers (1 black

cartridge and 1 color cartridge) but had the vantages of the older

large printers that employed distinguished color cartridges

One of the best distinct features of having discerned ink cartridges in your

printer is being capable to replace a single color when it is empty rather

of having to replace all colors. If you print multiple copies of the

same photo or image, you’ll most likely use more of one color. This

makes person cartridges particularly economical.

All in one or “tri-color” cartridges commonly integrate Cyan, Magenta and

Yellow. Some cartridges likewise have Light Cyan and Light Magenta for

a total of 6 possible colors in one single cartridge. The inks are not

HP makes a reliable number 61 Tri-color ink cartridge; it works very well with my HP Deskjet 3050 printer. The cartridge slips easily into and out of place and the ink never runs or takes any time to dry.

The only thing you need to remember is to remove the pink strip of tape covering the actual cartridge before installing it. Otherwise, you’re fine. If you print a lot, stock up on these if you ever catch a sale on them!

HP is regionalizing the printers so they can only print with one type of cartdridge even thought the the one you bought says that is for your printer, i see it a completely waste of money and cheat from the manufacturer because you should be able to buy any compatible branded cartdridge anywere no matter the model as long as it support it. PS: i adquire a hp branded one not a replacement, the regionalization is on the printer itself and i found it a completely waste of money
