There’s always a reason to give a thoughtful gift. If you have a senior or two on your buying goods list, how with regards to something a little dissimilar this year? Instead of yet another box of imagination soap or aftershave, consider a engineering science gift for today’s savvy seniors.

A Web Cam Means Happy Grandchildren

Give the grandparents the gift of visual and audio fundamental interaction with their children and grandchildren. If Grandma and Grandpa don’t live next door, they’ll love the chance to see and speak with their grandchildren thru a Web cam. Most of today’s Web cams have a built-in microphone, and may come optimized to be employed with Windows Messenger or a great deal of other IM system. With prices (at Amazon) varying from less than $30 to closely $300, there is a cam for each budget.

Remember that, while a great deal of seniors may be competent and more than willing to install their cams themselves and discover how to use them on their own, others may require assistance. Include installation and a few lessons as part of the gift in the latter case.

A Web Cam Means Peace of Mind

A wireless network camera could save the day in special circumstances. For example, Panasonic’s BL-C131A Network Camera Wireless 802.11 is promoted as a camera that lets you monitor your pets, your property, or even your children when you are not at home.

You set up the camera at any location, without requiring a local PC. Then, by logging on to a peculiarly indicated Internet site, you may check the room from any PC or Internet-equipped cell phone or PDA. You may also change the camera’s pointing direction and it is digital zoom thru the Web browser. The camera has a built-in microphone, as well as a special night-view mode.

Consider this camera’s application in the case of a senior who lives alone and may be in frail health. If you have ever frantically phoned Granddad’s neighbors to please check on him to be sure he’s OK, you’ll be grateful for the peace of mind this product could provide. With Granddad’s permission, you could set up the camera in his home and log on whenever you were concerned that he could need help-say, a time when he was not responsive to phone or e-mail messages.

At close to $300, this wireless camera is among the more powerful merchandise of it is kind available.

Rather than a Web cam, you might also consider the QuietCare System , a health-care system designed to help seniors live independently. This scheme uses a series of action sensors to learn Granddad’s normal action around his home. When the scheme notes a change in pattern, it notifies a call center or sends an e-mail alert or text message to a indicated party.

Computer Glasses Aren’t a Pain in the Neck

Does the computer-savvy senior in your life wear bifocals, trifocals, or progressive-lens eyeglasses? These glasses are not optimized for looking at a computer monitor. When wearing such glasses at the computer, Grandma has to tilt her head backward so she may focus on the screen when she is looking through the bottom share of the lens. To put it mildly, this gives her a big pain in the neck.

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way. Grandma will receive pleasure from her computer time so much more if you spring for a set of prescription computer glasses. Contact your friendly optometrist and ask for details. Be sure to ask your eye-care specialist in regards to glare-resistant lenses, likewise very necessary for computer users.

Keep Grandpa in the Loop With a DVD Player and Slide Show

Want something genuinely special for the senior in the family who is shut in, or perchance living in a continuing care facility? How regarding a small, portable DVD player and a special family slide show disc? Contact the extended family members and ask for digital pictures-both old and new. Compile your collection; turn it into a slide show using PowerPoint, Microsoft Plus! SuperPack for Windows XP or a heap of other slide show software; and then burn it to a DVD. (If using PowerPoint, you’ll need to include the free PowerPoint viewer on the DVD disc).

Remember to add titles and captions to each picture so Grandpa knows what he’s looking at. You might likewise shoot a heap of video, edit it, and send along a video production that your senior may watch in the privacy of his or her own room.

Portable DVD players range in price from $30 to a couple of hundred dollars. You will have to be sure that the machine you choose may play DVD+R/RW. Otherwise, there will be only disappointment when your home-recorded DVDs won’t play.

You could also include a few of Grandma or Grandpa’s favored movies with this gift. And, like the Web cam described above, your senior might be grateful for numerous instructions on how to use this gift

VoIP Means Affordable Long-Distance Calling-Anywhere

Are the family members disseminate over the four corners of the globe? If so, VoIP suppliers such as Skype, Vonage and others make it possible for seniors to stay in contact without worrying in regards to astronomical telephone bills.

Give your senior a microphone with headset (starting at around $20), or perhaps a special Skype phone. Make sure that Grandma has help with the Skype software installation, which may be tricky. Provided all parties have a Skype account, Grandma may talk with anyone, no matter of where they live, free of charge, using the microphone or the Skype phone. If she plans to phone an individual who will be using a landline phone, buy her a Skype credit or two costing in regards to $14 each. Rates per minute vary depending on location. For example, a Skype call made from Canada to a landline in Israel cost regarding $8 for thirty minutes.

An iPod Means Music, Audiobooks and Newscasts-Anywhere!

Consider giving Grandpa the gift of portable music and newscasts. With an iPod or other similar device, your senior doesn’t have to miss their favored newscast or other show while they walk around the neighborhood.

Audiobooks are in particular cherished if your senior has difficultness reading due to failing eyesight. You might consider adding a gift certificate from iTunes or from a service like Audible.com, for example, along with the media player. At Audible.com, you recompense $7.49 for the firstborn three months, then $14.95 afterward. Your senior gets one downloaded audio book per month, chosen from the searchable database of around 40,000 titles.

iTunes likewise has a lot of choices, including movies, television shows, music, audiobooks and podcasts. Be sure to introduce your senior to the world of podcasting, if he isn’t intimate with it.

Other miscellaneous ideas include a TiVo (seniors get weary of commercials, same as you do), or perchance an AirO2bic computer mouse , a device designed to be applied by arthritic hands.

Most helpful customer reviews

412 of 433 people found the following review helpful.
Excellent camera, excellent customer service
By K. Lam
My wife and I wanted to keep an eye on the nanny with our baby from work. After researching the network cameras for several months, it seemed that only Panasonic cameras consistently received positive (usually glowing reviews) whereas cameras from other major brands like Linksys, D-Link, etc received mediocre or poor reviews. So I went with Panasonic. And after about a month, I have to say I am very impressed with it. Some background: I have a classic Linksys WRT54G 802.11g router, with 2 WinXP PCs connected to it via ethernet and 3 more PCs connected wirelessly; plus, I have AT&T/SBC DSL service via a Speedstream 5100 DSL modem. If you’re moderately computer literate, you should have no problem following the included instructions to setup (view and control) the camera in wired mode or in wireless WiFi mode.

110 of 116 people found the following review helpful.
Best of consumer web cams (I have tested 20 models)
By Thomas D. Breithaupt
OVERVIEW
The BL-C131A is a wireless/router based camera (no PC needed). In my view, this is the ONLY way cameras should be used due to the unstable PC connected solutions (e.g., PC freeze-up, lost power, etc). It is an IP based system which needs its own local internet address which the included software does a pretty good job setting up automatically.

MY EXPERIENCES
I have tried over 20 wireless web cameras from 7 brands over the last 5 years ($100-$600) and none are close to the performance, reliability, ease of setup of the Panasonic cams for a consumer based product. Dlink used to lead the pack until the BL-C20A/30A units came out. I was a fan of Dlinks but the software setup, remote camera configurations, and Viewnetcam dynamic DNS service of the the Pana’s is just the best today.

ADVANTAGES
- The included software is the best on the market for finding the camera on your system and trying to configure it automatically. Most software engineers should be SHOT due to sloppy code but the Panasonic software and firmware (software inside the cameras) is pretty good for setup and reliability (I am an electrical engineer so I know the sloppy way most of these guys think).
- Tech support for Panasonic is the ONLY support I have contacted from 7 brands with AMERICANS speaking ENGLISH (not “Engrish”). Their patience and overall knowledge is truly outstanding and worth every extra penny this camera costs.
- I highly recommend you also buy the Panasonic wireless router. It automatically configures with the cameras and becomes really easy to find/control the cameras.
- The ability to reset/reconfigure the cameras remotely is INVALUABLE! I am often travleing in China, at my home in Chicago, or my home in Florida and want to make changes. I can do it remotely with 100% success after the first setup. I was even able to configure some cams in Chicago and Fedex to my wife in Florida and they booted up into the other system perfectly!
- The Viewnetcam dynamic DNS service is stunningly reliable. It has never gone down and my cameras reset/refind themselves every hour so if your local ISP dynamically changes your IP address (Comcast is worst) you are always going to have the cams back up in 1 hour.
- The ability to snap images, group small video screens, and “mouse-point” the cameras via the pan-tilt-zoom are outstanding.
- The built in microphones are AMAZINGLY sensitive and pick up small noises remarkably well. I could hear the kids playing outside the house with cams inside.
- The built in multi-screen servers can integrate different models of cameras. For example, I use a BL-C131A cam as #1 at my mom’s house for PTZ and audio. I then add a BL-C30A for simple PTZ photo/video and a BL-C20A for fixed photo/video. They all coexist in one screen and work beautifully!
- The photo snaps work PERFECTLY for building a simple web page and placing multiple screen snaps on 1 page (I placed thus a super slim matrix of what is happening in my homes. Each photo at 320×240 is only 8kb so they download fast.
- The mobile function (viewing on a cell phone browser) works INCREDIBLY well. I use it everyday on my Treo700P via Sprint.

DISADVANTAGES/CAUTIONS
- ANY web cam is tedious to setup, no matter the brand. Be patient, and call Pana’s tech support before returning the unit.
- DON’T expect HD quality video – these are 640×480 screens as best and the upload speed of your home network will always be the limiting factor. I do not recommend more than 4 cams online at once since this overloads even a good 768K upload system.
- The pan-tilt controls are outstanding. Lots of left-right-down travel but up is limited. Also, the zoom is a digital zoom (NOT an optical zoom) thus very pixelated and not worth much.
- The cams can fight for packets and “burble” your VOIP telephone calls.

SUMMARY
Outstanding product. I now own 14 units around the world and all are stone-cold reliable. Just great products.

Setup was a multi-step process, but went smoothly, and the free internet address really works. The camera has yet to lose signal, and I have it positioned a the farthest end of my wirelss network. Picture is clear, sound is ok, interface is very good. Only works well with Internet Explorer. On a Mac, the video will display in Firefox but without sound. I haven’t expored all of the features yet, but the main thing is that it works (more than can be said for many wireless products).

How to Pick the Correct Projector for Your Home Theater

You’re in the long run making the jump to the holy grail of home theater video displays; the front projection system. There’s not one thing else that delivers that in truth big, impressive video effigy like a front projection system. It’s how you get that real cinema experience in your home theater. Home theater projector prices have plummeted in recent years, and the size of the units have shrunk right along with the prices. No more do have to live with a coffin sized box on your ceiling. As sizes have decreased, the effigy quality and luminance have actually bettered dramatically. You’ll detect effigy quality and luminance are two distinguished issues.

How do choose the rectify home theater projector for your application from the myriad of projectors on the market today? There are so a heap of dissimilar units, each with their amount of energy and weaknesses. First of all, there are two main projection engineering categories, analog and digital. Analog projectors are based on CRTs, a mature engineering that’s been around for decades. Those are the projectors with the distinguished red, green and blue picture tubes and three lenses on the front. The other projectors use one of the newer digital technologies. These projectors have a single lens on the front. There are three major types of digital projectors on the market today; LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), DLP (Digital Light Processing) and LCOS (Liquid Crystal On Silicon). Each type of digital projector has it’s vantages too.

You need to evaluate your specific requisites in order to make the proper decision. First of all, look at the room. Is it a devoted home theater or a multi use room? Do you have finish control of the light? What aesthetic worries are you dealing with? What is your projector budget? How huge of an effigy do you want? Do you watch primarily DVD movies, TV movies, sports, or other TV programming? What specific source parts will you be using with your projector now or in the future? Is picture quality the most crucial thing, or are other concerns, such as noise, size or luminance more important? Are you installing the projector yourself, or are you hiring a habit installer to do the installation for you? Where will have to the projector be placed? Can you get the required video and control cables to that location? These questions will have to be answered to assure you get the proper projector for your home theater. If you are using a habit installer, they will take into account these constituents and specify the suitable unit for you.

Dramatic improvements in the picture quality of digital projectors notwithstanding, CRT projectors still deliver the most film like image. They have no pixel structure and deliver rich, deep blacks. Properly set up and calibrated, with a good video processor, and with the proper size screen, a CRT projector will deliver merely stunning picture quality. You’ll need to use a good quality projection screen, distinctively with 1.3 – 2.5 gain depending upon the size, looking at angel and ambient light in the room. Prices on actually great CRT projectors have fallen like a rock in the last year or two. You may get a 9″ CRT projector that employed to cost $35,000 to $50,000, for less than a third of that figure now. Many firms no longer make CRT projectors due to the decreased demand for projectors using this technology. In addition, the required video processors have decreased dramatically as well. Ten years ago a great video processor employed to cost $10,000 to $20,000. Now you may get one for well under $5,000 and as little as $2,000, brand new. They likewise without apparent effort last 8,000 – 10,000 hours when the right way set up.

If they are so fantastic, why doesn’t everyone still use CRT projectors? Well, there are galore detriments to a CRT projector as well. The best ones, with the 9″ tubes, are merely huge. It’s like hanging an upside down bathtub on your ceiling. If you want to put one underneath a coffee table, it’ll be one huge table. They are likewise very heavy, around 150 – 200lbs, so you need the proper structure to aid them. CRT projectors likewise require precise placement. They must be utterly square with the screen, at the rectify elevation for good picture quality. In addition, while a great deal of digital projectors have zoom lenses, permitting the projector to be placed at a range of distance from the screen, CRT projectors must be at a very precise distance for a specific screen size. These elements seriously limit placement options. While the more prominent CRT projectors put out more light than their littler counterparts, they have pretty dim images equated to even the least pricey digital projectors. Finally, CRT projectors require specialized set up in order to get a watchable, much less an optimal image. Every 6 months to a year, they will have to be re-calibrated to see to it you are still getting optimal picture quality.

There are numerous very good reasons why most humans are using digital projectors in their home theaters today. Many are little and light, require minimal setup and calibration (compared to a CRT), are quiet and have a bright, sharp image. But, there are a good deal of dissimilar digital projectors, ranging in price from around $700.00 to over $100,000.00. Which one is the best for your specific application? Thankfully, the circumstance is changing, but some of the digital projectors marketed for home theater use are actually just re-badged formally presenting something units. Presentation projectors sacrifice good video quality for brightness. Brightness is much more essential when giving a Powerpoint formally presenting something in a lit room than the rectify color palate or the black level. The red on the pie chart looks great, no matter what, as long as you may see it from the back row.

You want to choose one of the newer units that has been veritably designed for home theater applications. The actual engineering science used for the imaging chip is not all that important, there are great examples using all three of the digital technologies. Companies such as Sony, Runco, InFocus, Vidikron, Marantz, Benq, Panasonic, Sharp, Optima and Sanyo and a great deal of others all make great home theater projectors. The projector will have outstanding black levels, to accurately reproduce detail in the darker areas of the picture and give outstanding contrast. Absolute luminance is not exceedingly important, unless you have a multi-use room without finish light control or you have a lot of people over for sporting events. If you are agreeably diverting galore humans for sports, it’s nice to have numerous light on in the room, so a more magnificent projector is advantageous.

Projectors come in a number of dissimilar resolutions. The lower the resolution, the littler the screen you may use before you may see pixel structure. Also, the lower resolutions will not support true HDTV. Most will display HD, but at a decreased resolution. The lowest end projectors specifically have resolutions of 800 x 600. The Texas Instruments Matterhorn chip is popular on budget priced wide screen projectors, and has a solution of 1024 x 576. Anything over a solution of 720 will concede for unfeigned HDTV. The TI series of HD-2 DLP chips has a solution of 1280 x 720. In April of 2005, TI declared new DLP chips with 1920 x 1080 was ready for production, permitting for true 1080p resolutions. Projectors with this chip will start out shipping in Q1 of 2006. Blu-Ray Disc has stated they will aid 1080p, so by late 2006 there will be commercially available 1080p content besides Microsoft’s WMHD discs.

Another very necessary aspect of home theater projectors is the internal video processing. This is one of the necessary deviations amongst good home theater projectors and demonstration projectors. Digital projectors ought to display progressive scan images at the native solution of the chip, so any interlaced signal, such as 1080i HDTV, ought to be de-interlaced and then scaled to the native chip resolution. Poor quality video processors, weather in the projector or external units, cause all sorts of video artifacts that may get in the way of a satisfying video presentation. This subject alone is too in depth for this article, as entire texts have been written on the subject. However, one mutual video artifact is “jaggies” where diagonal lines are jagged rather of straight. Another annoying artifact caused by poor video processing is moire’. This is a pattern seen as alternating light and dark lines that modify position as the effigy moves.

You’ll want to be sure your projector supports the HDMI or DVI with HDCP copy shelter to grant you to connect a HD-DVD, scaling DVD player or Blu-Ray Disc player. These appliances will only grant greatest or most complete or best possible solution on a display that has a digital video input with HDCP copy protection. In the future, cable TV and satellite suppliers may restrict the greatest or most complete or best possible solution to their digital outputs too.

When choosing your new home theater projector, make sure it has the video quality, brightness, size, auditory and budget characteristics that you need. Projectors are a huge investment, choose conservatively and you will be rewarded with years of thrilling video in your home theater.

Previous to getting this player, we were using a PS2 as our DVD player. I could have probably got a BluRay player for less but the integration with my existing SHARP TV was my main criteria and I was willing to pay a little extra for it. If your TV is compatible with AQUOS LINK (which mine is), you can control both the TV and the player with simple operations. I am able to perform simple functions of the TV with the player’s remote and functions of the player with the TV’s remote. When the playback on the player is started the TV automatically knows the input without having to specify the input (which I would normally have to do with our game consoles PS2 and Wii). When the player is stopped, turning off the TV automatically turns off the player too. When you switch to the LCD TV input terminal connected to this player, the power of this player will be turned on automatically. The image quality is wonderful on up-converted standard DVDs. I recently watched the BluRay “Gnomeo and Juliet” with the kids and the picture quality with this player on my Sharp 46″ was nothing short of incredible! With the AQUOS LINK, images are automatically adjusted to the most suitable image quality for the AQUOS TV. So far I am really happy with this player and the integration with my SHARP TV. The eject seems a bit slow as does the load time of DVDs, but nothing that is completely intolerable. Note: the manual is clear that there may be firmware updates on Sharp’s product page, which there are, which will improve playback of discs and Netflix. Normally I go with Amazon, but I purchased this from Abt Electronics because they had the best price at the time.

Pros: Excellent Image Quality, Easy Set-Up, Seamless Integration with Sharp TVs, Backwards Compatible DVD Up-conversion, Wireless Internet via included dongle that plugs in the back.

Cons: A bit pricey compared to other BluRay players out there, but it does include the wireless dongle, and is 3D capable (which I don’t care about).

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
Nothing short of awful
By Gregory L. Meece
I bought this on sale at Fry’s. What a mistake. For very basic BluRay discs, it does a fair job of playing them (hence the nominal 2 stars). The interface looks like it was designed in the early 80′s, and many discs simply won’t play properly on it. Example: Iron Man (first one) – about halfway through, it simply freezes. You will wait and wait and you’ll get like 3 frames in 5 minutes. Finally, you stop the disc and eventually you get the atrocious interface back. I thought it was the disc, but returned the disc to the store and the exact same thing happened with a new copy of the disc. Other friends have the same disc – plays fine on their players.

Oh, and try to update the firmware – that’ll fix it, right? Not so fast partner! If you try to do a network update, it lies to you and says you’re up to date. Go to the website and you see your firmware is way out of date. Go through the retentive and stupid USB flash update, it gets about 10% through and it tells you the update has failed. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Oh, and did I mention that the login for both Netflix and YouTube doesn’t work? When you try to access the text input box for Netflix, you can’t select the text – up-down-left-right don’t select the alpha characters, they select the interface behind that dialog box. So, Netflix is worthless. For YouTube login, you can activate both the username and password dialogs, but it refuses the OK button for the login button.

One more thing – the product is supposed to support BD-Live. It does sorta. However, if you utilize the wireless connection it won’t work unless you have a freshly formatted USB flash drive inserted where it can store content (there’s NO internal storage). Try finding that detail in the manual. Give up? Good – ’cause IT’S NOT THERE!

I haven’t bought a Sharp product since the early 1990′s (a crappy VCR as I recall). Maybe I’ll try them again in another 20 years – this one’s going back!

There are a lot of bags and cases available to protect your valuable electronics and hold the a heap of accessaries that seem to surround them. Why run the risk of damaging or scratching your camera lens, when a low-cost case may protect it and increase it is lifespan? There are camera bags, DVD bags, GPS cases, hard drive cases, and may other bags available to suit your electronics’ specific needs.

Cases are either soft or hard-shelled, each serving a specific purpose. Soft shell cases are meant for short trips where there is not much of a danger damaging your electronic devices. Hard shell cases are better for protecting highly worthful electronics or when journeying long distances and shelter is vital. Bags also come in a potpourri of materials such as neoprene, nylon, molded EVA, aluminum, plastic, and more. Each material fits a specific purpose, depending if you want extra protection, added padding, or weatherproofing.

There are weather-resistant bags that are perfective for traveling through naturally wet places, like Seattle, Washington or even the beaches of the Caribbean. These bags repel water, keeping both the bags’ interior and exterior dry. Why run the peril of having water ruin one of your electronics? Even altho there are new merchandise on the market that assert to remove the water and restore broken electronics, viability of these productions is questionable.

There are rather a lot of dissimilar digital camera cases available on the market. When searching for a digital camera case you want to make sure it suits your needs appropriately. Some bags only hold your camera and a memory card, and these are idealisti for lightweight travel. These pocket size bags are perfective for personal cameras that do not require all the accessaries the professional cameras need. However, if you plan to shoot professional-quality images then you might be in the market for a more prominent carrying case. Larger bags may store multiple lenses, spare batteries, film (for those still using it), memory cards, flashes, tripods, stands, and other accessories. These bags are larger and bulky, making them restrictive for traveling. Zipper-sealed bags are a ought to since Velcro may come undone easily, potentially dropping your highpriced camera. Some have dual zippers for quick and easy access to your entire case and it is accessories.

GPS gimmicks ought to be stored in a case when not in use. This is to protect the screen from harm and the device from breaking. Cases come in a great deal of dissimilar sizes and shapes to fit your precise GPS units. You may get a form-fitting case to hold just your GPS unit, or you may get a huge bag to store your GPS and all your accessories. Some cases have extra storage compartments to hold all your GPS accessaries such as windshield mounts, remote controls, AC to DC power adapters, chargers, mounting bases, remote antennas, map software, and perhaps even a few things not quintessentially GPS-related.

External hard drive cases for your computers are necessary if you plan to travel long distances with your hard drive. They are distinctively sold in hard shell cases as to provide extra protection. Some are even made of aluminum to provide extra protection. There are dissimilar sizes to fit your specific hard drive, so make sure you recognise the dimensions you are looking for. It’s preferable to find zipper-sealed bags as buttons and Velcro may open unexpectedly, perchance resulting in accidental slippage and dropping. A carrying handle, arm strap, or wheels will make it that much having little impact to travel with. You do not want to lose your hard drive or have it damaged, losing all your files. If you must take your hard drive with you, it is of the utmost importance to use a hard-drive carrying case or perhaps danger data loss.

The main point to take away is that not using a carrying case for your electronics may be a highpriced mistake. Not only will you be out the cash you expended on your electronics, but all the time and energy put into them as well. Like the old saying goes, “It is better to be safe than sorry”, meaning that you will have to be prepared so you do not have to remunerate for your faults down the road. Of course accidents occur, but you may prepare yourself with a strong lasting case. If all else fails, make sure you have insurance for your products.

It is the perfect fit for the TomTom One 3rd Edition.

In fact, this as the new model is, I could fit at least 4 of them inside the case. Not only too large, the internal pouch for accessories is difficult to close with the short velcro tab that locks inside the pouch. Also, lateral elastic tapes make the case almost impossible to open wide. This is a general purpose case – not specific for the listed GPS models. Try something else.

I love the little net for accessories. Very functional and good quality.
