Last week Amazon and Microsoft signed a patent cross-licensing deal last week. Currently, the Kindle uses the Linux OS. Did Amazon enter this deal with Microsoft to replace Linux OS? If that is the case, it genuinely could change the foundation for Amazon, and revolutionize the Kindle into an wholly dissimilar yet powerful device.

Tightly beneath wraps, the details of the agreement are unknown as well as the cost or purpose, but speculation emerged amid the Open Source and Free Software community. Is Amazon going to phase out the Linux OS and replace it with the Microsoft OS in the Kindle and server infrastructure?

Maybe that is the plan with this agreement. Amazon is a powerhouse in the ebook reader market. Although, Amazon hasn’t freed any sales figures for the Kindle 2 or Kindle DX appliances yet, the shipping volumes are high. Additionally, Amazon’s success may be attributed on the Kindle Store selections and prices even though the new agency model may dent that a bit.

So now the question is, what is Amazon going to do to stay in the gadget game? With the release of the iPad and it is apps and content, Linux and Java UI won’t compete. Some have said that there is no contest among the Kindle and iPad, but Apple’s creation will take a heap of of the market away.

Perhaps Amazon has a Kindle tablet in the works. Imagine a device that will use new screen technologies, not E Ink or LCD, but perhaps Mirasol. It will have more inviolable embedded CPUs much like the ones employed in smartphones. If this is the case, a very innovative OS would be necessitated to manage this type of device. Microsoft’s OS could handle it.

Continuing on with the creation of the “Kindle Tablet”, imagine a Windows 7 Phone Series device that has a vibrant 10.1 inch screen, a wireless network, Microsoft’s Zune/Amazon MP3 music service and access to the Kindle bookstore. All of this with Microsoft as the foundation. No doubt, this dream machine will compete with the iPad, and any upcoming gadget that enters the market.

With the success of the Kindle products, Amazon isn’t going to get booted out of the ebook reader market anytime soon. Amazon is a pioneer and has changed the way we purchased books in 1995 with the launch of their website. In fact, with a deal with Microsoft, they may proceed to dominate the ereader market with a new product.

Wyatt
First and foremost, Kindle is an exceptional product. That being said, the battery provided for it, is not. After less than three months of moderate use, the battery that came with the Kindle went from working great to flat dead. I would definitely recommend that you buy at least one extra battery to have around just in case you find yourself inconvenienced by this poor product. Fortunately for us, the pricing on this battery is fairly low. Hopefully, the manufacturer is looking into this and will be providing better batteries down the road. {ssintrepid}

Based on the comments I have read others are having the same issue. Is Amazon looking into this? Are they going to make good on the replacement batteries for customers who have this problem? It’s a shame, the device is great. I hope they don’t let this issue overshadow the device’s good points. Take a lesson from Apple when the iPod had battery issues when it first came out. FIX IT!

I can understand to some small extent why the iPod doesn’t – as they are shooting for extreme size reduction. However even in their case – it was a mistake.
