Before we get started, let me say that I am not a Dell reseller, nor do I make a commission from the sales of any Dell computer you’ll read when it comes to here. In other words, I am not connected to Dell Computer in any way. I’ve just done a good deal of exploration on Dell laptops and I am sharing it with you here, no strings attached.

OK, got it? Let’s go.

As you know, Dell formulates a huge collection of laptops and notebook computers under lots of dissimilar brand names. Here’s a brief outline/rundown of what they offer:

Dell Vostro

Dell’s Dimension is being phased out and a “value-oriented” line of laptops — Vostro (Latin for “yours”) — has been developed for the little business market. One outstanding thing to note: Dell claims the Vostro line will not come with “trialware” (or “crapware”) pre-installed. The other thing is that the Vostro laptops have an “upmarket” — classier — black finish with chrome trim.

Current Models

The following laptop models were freed for the duration of July, 2007 in Canada and the US.

Vostro 1000

Vostro 1400

Vostro 1500

Vostro 1700

Dell Latitude

Dell’s Latitude laptops are aimed at the corporate market, e.g., the road warriors. Latitude uses standardized, interchangeable constituents allround the line. After all, businesses want fast and cheap product service, right? In addition, the specs are meant to NOT alter for various years (also for help purposes).

Note: This contrasts with the Dell Inspiron line which is purposed at the (fickle and flighty?) buyer market whose specifications modify regularly.

Dell Latitude computers are also built with a more lasting casing and internal metal frames. In addition, a heap of offer hard drive shelter schemes in case the computer is dropped or suffers a severe impact.

Current models

Current Latitude models include the ATG, X1, D430, D520, D600, D620, the newly launched D630 and the D830. Select models based on the Intel Core Duo, Core Solo and Core 2 Duo are now available. The D420, D620, and D820 feature wide aspect LCD screens: 12.1″, 14.1″, and 15.4″ respectively.

The Latitude D620 weighs 4.7 pounds, and the base model includes a 1.67GHz Intel Core Duo T2300 processor (667MHz front-side-bus) and 2M of L2 cache. There is an option to upgrade to a Core 2 Duo T7X00 processor (667Mhz font-side-bus) with 4M of L2 cache.

It comes frequent with 512M of DDR2 RAM, expandable to 4GB, and four USB ports.

For graphics, it offers the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, and an option to upgrade to NVIDIA discrete graphics at the expense of lower battery life.

Dell Precision

The Precision brand name features the most powerful laptop computers that Dell makes. These include the M4300 and M90. The M4300 is a little less in quality equated to the M90. These computers, when set up for uttermost computing, may exceed $3,000. The Precision line top-shelf: it is nVidia Quadro FX 1500M – 3500M gives you super-high-end video graphics.

Dell Inspiron

Inspiron is aimed at the buyer laptop market. As of June 26, 2007 the Inspiron name also refers to Dell’s desktop systems as well.

Current Configurations

Dell modified their Inspiron series in June of 2007 with the 1420/1420 N, 1520/1521, and 1720/1721 models.

Inspiron 1720/1721

The 1720 features an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (up to 2.4 Ghz) with an integrated Intel X3100 or NVIDIA GeForce Go 8400M GS/8600M GT. The 1721 likewise features RAID 0 or 1 hard drive configurations, an option which is strangely missing from the 1720. They also lack DVI or HDMI connections, which would be expected for a high-end desktop replacement, given their HDCP compliant graphics card and Blu-ray Disc option. Both models are available in 8 colors.

XPS

Dell has marketed this brand as an all-in-one multimedia system.

XPS M2010

Software includes Dell’s “Media Center” with an instant-access button to speedily start out the system direct in this application, and it is equipped with an 8 speaker plus subwoofer audio system.

On the downside, the battery is only good for regarding 2 hours, but you are probably not buying this laptop to take on the road — the scheme weighs closely 18 pounds. That said, it is entirely portable and self-contained.

The case design includes a detachable keyboard with full-size keys and integrated trackpad, and flexible approach to screen placement. The base unit cannot be apart from the monitor, though the monitor offers articulation in two locations. The design incorporates a big handle which likewise forms share of the display hinge – the optional carry case uses this and does not provide a handle to lift the system, but it does feature casters and a telescopic handle to wheel the case around.

The keyboard is often reported to attach magnetically. It uses two big spring-loaded locating catches, but does not repair rigidly to the chassis. Instead, the folded screen holds everything together. But when open the keyboard does detach easily.

M2010 features a wide, flat CPU section with a symmetrical design – the optical drive is flush to the top surface and motorised. Internally the symmetry is maintained with the centrally mounted CPU flanked by two SATA HD drives and two cooling systems – the GPU and CPU coolers vent on opposite sides of the base.

The M2010 also features a distinctive option, the Dell Premium Remote invented by Gyration Inc. Using 2.4GHz RF on an internal board. Referred to in the service manual as a Wireless USB board. it uses the Cypress “WirelessUSB” chipset, which predates and does not conform to the Wireless USB standard. the remote offers basic HID functions and control for Windows Media Centre with an further and added LCD permitting navigation of the music library in a style akin to an iPod or similar device.

The remote had been exclusive to the M2010 from launch. In August 2007 Gyration declared the Ultra R4000 remote which offers the same LCD-display functionality and has a similar appearance.

XPS M1710

The higher-end mobile XPS computer available in black or red that features a 17″ widescreen, Intel Core 2 Duo processors, NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900GS or 7950GTX video cards, 7200 RPM SATA hard drive, and DDR2 SDRAM. The Inspiron E1705/9400 offers similar features, notably the Core Duo or Core 2 Duo processors, 17″ screen, and the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900GS for a lesser price (about $1000 less than the M1710). The M1710 does offer distinguishable user- and software-changeable LED lighting in the touchpad and fan outlets/inlets, as well as the lid, likewise including BluRay Disc Drive in a heap of models. The system was marketed to gamers. It was physically identical to the Inspiron 9100. This computer was later substituted by the Inspiron XPS Gen 2 and ultimately the current XPS M1710. This model is highly expected[weasel words] to be substituted in the coming weeks.

XPS M1330

This high end laptop, freed in June of 2007, features the Intel Centrino’s Fourth Generation Santa Rosa platform. It features a 13.3″ screen either with CCFL or WLED. The WLED version will have a 0.3 Mega pixel camera, as opposed to the 2MP camera with the original CCFL screen. Moreover, XPS 1330 also features a biometric fingermark reader, which was commonly found in business class laptops like the latitude series. The XPS 1330, with the WLED screen is thinner and more brilliant than the former XPS 1210 version. The XPS M1330 likewise offers the NVIDIA GeForce Go 8400M GS graphics card as an option.

Conclusion

There you have it — the Dell line of laptops. Hopefully you gained an appreciation of the matchings and deviations among the dissimilar brand names.

Please note, this version of the Applecare.Protection.Plan is ONLY for the Macbook Pro 15″ and 17″.

The Macbook and the Macbook Pro 13″ are covered under another version of the Applecare Protection Plan -AppleCare Protection Plan for Mac Laptops 13 Inches and Below (NEWEST VERSION)

The Applecare Protection Plan – an expensive requirement if you buy / own an Apple notebook.

What most people don’t know is that Apple doesn’t make the logicboards (motherboards) or the processors or the hard drives or the DVD burners inside their Macbooks. Like all computer manufacturers, Apple sources its parts from component manufacturers like Seagate, Nvidia, Intel, Sony etc etc. These parts just like all electronic components can and may fail after a period of time. Once a part fails and if your macbook pro’s one year standard warranty is over, Apple charges extremely high fees to repair or replace parts.

For example – Motherboard replacement – $1000 to $1200. Superdrive replacement – $200 to $300. LCD screen replacement – $800 to $1000. It’s better to pay for Applecare once than pay Apple exorbitant repair fees every time a part fails.

Basically, the A.P.P. is a 2 year warranty extension to your apple laptop’s standard one year hardware warranty. It provides unlimited phone support and hardware diagnosis. It also offers Mail-in repair for Mac notebooks using a prepaid shipping box provided by Apple and service by an apple store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

The A.P.P. also gives you global repair coverage so if a hardware issues arises while you’re in another country and there’s an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider near by, you can take your mac in for diagnosis and repair.

It does not offer any sort of damage protection or on-site repair.

Please remember to buy the A.P.P. if you plan to do so before the first year of ownership is up. If you bought your machine on X Date 2011 – buy the A.P.P.before X Date 2012. Apple will not honor an A.P.P. policy bought even 2 days after the first year is over (in most cases unless you get lucky and speak to a friendly agent on the phone willing to relax the rules a bit)

I’m sorry to be recommending an extended warranty, but it’s a necessary evil with Apple products. There is no guarantee that something will go wrong with your expensive mac notebook after the first year but if something does go wrong after the first year, it’s better to be covered by the A.P.P. and avoid paying those exorbitant repair/replacement costs.

NOTE – Don’t buy Applecare from Apple. Shop around – there are good deals to be found at Authorised Apple resellers and other legit online outlets. Amazon used to be one of the best places to purchase an A.P.P. from but Amazon has raised it’s price also. It used to sell the A.P.P. for $ 299 dollars, but has now increased the price to $ 325 and it’s been stuck there for a while. I have no idea why Amazon raised the price but you should buy when the price is low or a price correction occurs.
Hope this helps!

Harris
AppleCare is both an extended warranty and an extension of phone support. It extends the warranty from one year to three, and phone support from 90 days to three years. Note that if you purchase a display at the same time you purchase your MacBook Pro, AppleCare for your computer also covers your display.

It’s impossible to predict if you’ll get your money’s worth out it or not, as that will be determined by whether or not your MacBook Pro needs any repairs in the second or third year and how likely you are to need the extended phone support. I’ll just tell you my story so you’ll understand why I gave AppleCare five stars.

I purchased AppleCare with my first MacBook Pro, which I bought in May, 2006, along with a 30″ Cinema Display. The computer, just over five years old at this point, has never needed a repair. However, the batteries in that model clearly had problems. If you don’t use the computer on the battery a fair bit the battery goes bad. Once that happens, you can still use the computer on the battery, but at some point the computer will just shut down. No warning, it doesn’t go to sleep, and the battery indicator in the menu bar says it still has plenty of charge.

I had at least three batteries replaced under AppleCare, maybe four, and the last one was actually after the three years of AppleCare were up. But I fussed at them for using what I considered a faulty design for the batteries and in the interest of customer satisfaction they gave me one last battery, which they didn’t have to do.

The display, on the other hand, did need a repair. It just died and wouldn’t light up. I called Apple and explained the problem. They shipped me a box overnight. I packed up the display and called FedEx to arrange a pickup the next day. Unfortunately the folks at Apple couldn’t reproduce the problem, so they shipped it back and sure enough it worked. Some time later, after the three years were up and it was no longer covered under AppleCare, the problem recurred. Since it was out of warranty at that point I did some testing and eventually figured out that the problem only showed up if I plugged the display’s USB or FireWire connector into my computer, something I didn’t normally do. So I called Apple to see what it would cost to repair, and after explaining the history the guy offered to repair it for free since they missed the problem when I sent it in the first time. Again, they went above and beyond their legal obligation.

In general I’ve found Apple’s service to be top notch. My Time Capsule’s power supply died. They overnighted a box to me, had FedEx pick it up, fixed it, and overnighted it back to me. They never try to weasel out of doing a repair and even cover them when they don’t have to, which I think is very cool.

In my experience, when you call for phone support you get really nice people, located in America, who are generally pretty helpful. Without AppleCare phone support is free for 90 days and $50 per incident after that. With AppleCare it’s free for three years. So if you upgrade your OS two years from now and have a problem you can call them for help and it’s free. How much this is worth to you just depends on you and whether you know someone who can help if you have a problem.

So for me AppleCare was totally worth it and I had absolutely no complaints. If you’re pretty Mac/computer savvy and use the battery right AppleCare may not be a good value for you. You have a year to buy it after you buy the computer, so you have the option to wait and see how things go. If you make it to the end of the year and haven’t had any problems you might decide it’s not worth the $300.

On the other hand, if you need to replace a battery within the first year, need phone support at times, or it comes out that your model has a component with a higher-than-expected failure rate, you’ll probably want to get the AppleCare coverage. Just remember you have to buy it while the computer is still covered under the original one-year warranty.

I just bought a new MacBook Pro. The current plan is to see how things go for the first year and decide near the end if I think AppleCare makes sense for this one. I think the new ones use a better battery design, so I’m hoping I won’t I won’t have the battery problems I had before.

Hope that helps.

Johnson
In early 2009, I purchased a 2008 17 inch MacBook at one third less than list price, from an online discount eTailer. This discount e-tailer (sometimes sarcastically referred to as “less than honest Abe’s”) gave me a strong pitch to purchase an extended repair contract from a camera repair service. Instead, I purchased AppleCare at a discount, separately, from Amazon.com. Registration of Apple Care was easy, online, using the serial number in the box, shipped from Amazon.

Local Apple users’ groups told me that I was asking for trouble. In their opinions, Apple disapproves of online e-tailers selling anything Apple, at a discount. In their opinions, Apple hardware sold at any price less than list price is somehow “grey-market” and it will be difficult to get Apple to repair grey-market hardware.

However, this worked out for me. That 2008 MacBook started to run hot as a stove, literally. Although it ran without any hangs or crashes, it was hot enough to make typing uncomfortable on my wrists. About 20 months after I bought it, one of the cooling fans started to whine like a siren.

Apple telephone support told me to take the computer to an Apple Store, which happened to be close to me. I did not need to ship my computer. When I visited the Apple Store, they treated my computer as if I had bought it from Apple.com. The repair was at no cost to me, and completed in two days. My MacBook now runs cool, literally! Whatever was wrong with the cooling system, the “Mac Geniuses” fixed it, permanently.

My conclusion, based on this single experience:
It is possible to purchase Apple computers, at significant discounts. But I recommend getting the extended Apple Care warranty. First, if you live near an Apple Store, you can get fairly quick repairs, in my experience. Second, you get Apple telephone support. That is not included in with repair contracts from a camera repair service, as far as I can tell.

Of course, if the price of Apple Care rises, you might consider “self insurance”, that is, doing without the extended warranty, and paying for repairs or replacement, out of your own pocket. In my case, I probably broke even.

However, it is not nearly as functional as the old State Series software–and harder (maybe impossible) to configure as well. Many key functions are not yet available. It would not access my old State Series. Support is abysmal–the only way to get phone support is to finally figure out their support email, then wait 72 hours for a phone call in response. SOME DAY they may get their act together–the concept is good, but they are just over their heads.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful.
A waste of your time and money
By David
Other reviewers are correct. This is a horrible implementation of a good idea. I already had installed the National Parks and a state TOPO set. Thinking an upgrade to the latest version MIGHT pay off, I paid additional for an upgrade.

Unfortunately, the programmers didn’t have enough wits to install the upgrade into the same (default) directory as the legacy products I’d bought — so I couldn’t use the program. The interface was simply a confused mess when trying to analyze the problem. A call to “customer service” led to a message saying to send them a detailed email about the problem.

Finally, I figured out that the app had installed itself to the wrong directory, so I reinstalled and changed the default installation directory. That got the program working. Sort of.

Now, when I click on a National Park from the main map, it tells me I need to buy some other product — even though I’ve paid for the National Park maps and this was supposed to upgrade me to use them better.

The user interface is simply awful. It is non-intuitive, clunky, and obviously designed with the user’s needs as an afterthought. Think: early 1990s Windows3.1 applications on a modern platform, and you’ll get the idea.

I also notice that the elevation shows up upside down on many maps. For example, when looking to see how high a point is, the maps show “0098″ instead of “8600″ when looking up the side of a mountain.

I “updated” the map I was viewing online, and maps from 2002 were installed. Why weren’t they included on the installation CDs that were just recently released? Beyond that, the maps I’ve sampled are simply wrong. I see a jeep trail where I KNOW none exists, and other trails I know about don’t show up. Without going any further at this point, I am sure the app has many more bugs to be discovered.

The 3D mode won’t draw across dual monitors, unlike Google’s offering.

National Geographic reminds me of Disney’s software: turning out a lot of junk to milk unsuspecting consumers just cause they’re big and they can get by with it. This app will make you pay more money to National Geographic in “updates” to see useful detail(i.e. 7.5 series).

Yep, unless you’re on dialup, use Google Earth instead. It’s free and it works far better for seeing the true lay of the land.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful.
Not the 1
By Ken L. Carpenter
This isn’t the 1 to buy. Topo! uses USGS data. It is a long way from what we have come to expect and use when compared to Google Earth. As you zoom in, the maps get fuzzy. If you export these maps to a gps unit, the maps look the same as on the computer. Zoom in and they get fuzzy.

The engine that Topo! is built on seems to operate in in an odd way. Certainly not smoothly as in Google Earth. The data on the DVD is only basic. You have to connect to the web and the “store” to see more mapping detail. It isn’t a free standing program that can be used in the field unless you have already downloaded the detailed maps.

Need topo maps for your Magellan? Try Topo USA. Topo! isn’t the 1 for you.

With a load of special features and a sleek, lightweight body, the Apple MacBook Air MC503LL/A is “mobility mastered.”

Start with the revolutionary flash storage. A full 128GB of flash memory storage comes with this Apple MacBook Air, replacing the spinning hard drive that comes in a great deal of other laptops and in most desktop computer units. In replacing the spinning drive in this way, the manufacturers of the Apple MacBook Air MC503LL/A are capable to save space and develop a lighter laptop.

A 1.86GHz Intel Core Duo 2 processor offers multi-tasking support and performance with a 1066MHz FSB and 6MB L2 cache. This gives you finish performance by shifting power around where it’s necessitated and saving energy whenever and wherever the unit can. You’ve never seen such an effective processor setup.

2GB of installed DDR3 RAM with support for up to 4GB of RAM powers the system, while the NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics card provides impeccable video and fast frame rates for gaming. The 13.3-inch LED-backlit screen with 1440×900 pixel solution brings you full screen HD with crisp visual representation and bold colours.

The Apple MacBook Air MC503LL/A includes a pile of software and special features that you’re going to love. Mac OS X Snow Leopard comes with iTunes, Time Machine, Spaces, Spotlight, iChat, Safari, QuickTime, and a host of other apps and utilities. GarageBand is a fun program that allows for the creation of music and even lets you take piano lessons on your MacBook.

A special part of the MacBook Air and the entire Apple line is the AppleCare Protection Plan. This offers service for an amazing three years after your basi purchase, making sure you get all of the service and support for peripherals as needed. It’s hard to find a more comprehensive buyer help package out there.

As you may see, the Apple MacBook Air is an awful machine that exemplifies everything a laptop will have to be. With a great set of shelter packages and features, you can’t go wrong.

Nozicka
You may want to exercise caution in ordering this product. I ordered the AppleCare Protection Plan for the Mac Pro. What I was sent had the correct Amazon item label but under the shrink wrap, was visible the label “MacBook Pro”. I contacted Apple to see if this could indeed be used for the Mac Pro and they told me no and advised me to return the item to Amazon. I didn’t want to get another version of the same erroneous package, so I opted for a refund rather than a replacement.

If you order this item, make sure that what you receive is what you ordered by checking the Apple bar code labels on the bottom of the box. If they don’t agree, don’t open the shrink wrap.

This product is NOT for the Mac Book Pro Laptops. I purchased this and Apple would not register and verified that this was not for the Macbook Pro even though the label says. You need to buy the Macbook 13″ or Macbook 15″Applecare which covers either the Macbook or Macbook Pro laptops. Very confusing.

I was a bit nervous, since I’ve only used Best Buy’s warranty service and never had tried a mail-in service before, but the difference in price was significant enough to take a chance with it.

I just filed a claim with Square Trade and received astoundingly good service. None of the nonsense that I’m used to from Geek Squad- e.g., waiting for hours at the Best Buy service counter for someone to pay attention to me, then being told the issue isn’t covered, or it’ll cost extra, it’ll take 2-6 weeks to send the unit out for service, etc.

None of that crap when I dealt with Square Trade. To the contrary, I received INSTANT help, yes it’s fully covered, INSTANT e-mail labels for the return, great response.

I’ll never use Geek Squad again. I’m a Square Trade fan now. Seriously- these guys are the best.

Had to cash in on 2 of them since one was ipod and it cratered, and other was laptop and it died too. Square Trade first of all has the best priced warranties ( I dare you to compare to Best Buy and other places where you pay well over 100/200 for laptops) and these warranties are straight forward and without gimmicks. In both cases, my items were not repairable and they determined it pretty quickly and gave me the money for replacement and I am happy about that. No hassles, no arguments about value or how damage occurred, etc. Just straight across the board, you give them your side, they review the item and voila! presto, you are give the amount you insured. Now that is the right way to do business, since lets face it, when you are not able to use your ipod or laptop, you want to get back into gear as soon as possible and not have to wait for weeks, with Square Trade you can be up and running pretty quickly. Unfortunately they are no longer selling them in certain states, and my state is one of them, otherwise, I would keep on buying them again and again. If you are fortunate to live in states where they do sell, then definitely avail yourself of their warranties, you will be glad you did.

The first one was on a laptop I purchased several months ago. Only days after I received the laptop from Amazon, I spilled a drink all over the keyboard. One call to SquareTrade and I had a UPS shipping label to send the broken computer to them. Less than two weeks later, the money for the computer (minus the $50 deductible) was deposited into my account. They are fast and their customer service agents are polite and knowledgeable. This is the only company I’ll ever use for warranties.
