Having just written an article when it comes to downloading free eAudiobooks from public libraries, I tried a number of appliances for this purpose. The most crucial attribute is that the player has the capacity to bookmark so that you may carry on where you left off when listening to eAudiobooks. If your player does not have this feature, listening to audiobooks become a cumbersome chore as you have to fast forward manually.

Unfortunately, Windows Mobile gimmicks equipped with Microsoft’s Media Player do not have the capacity to bookmark. However, there are various third party apps that will grant you to bookmark on a WM device.

I tested rather a few MP3 players that would player audiobooks just fine, but without bookmarking capabilities. Make sure that you find an MP3 player that offers this feature. One of my favorites is the Sandisk Sansa Clip MP3 player. The earlier versions of the Clip do not bookmark. But, it is a simple matter of updating the firmware with a download from the Sandisk Website to win a victory over this problem. You may even download a utility that mechanically updates your device each time you sync it. The latest release of the Clip has bookmarking capability built-in.

The Clip measures approximately 2 1/8 x 1 3/8 x 3/8 inches and weighs a mere ounce. It’s name is derived from the detachable clip on the back that allows you to attach effortlessly to your clothing. We’ve all seen elaborate attachment systems that are ugly and awkward. The Clip is a outstanding solution for this universal problem.

It comes in a assortment of colors for the fashion conscious including silver, black, blue, pink, and red. It ranges in memory from 1 GB to 4 GB and ranges in price from $39.95 to $79.39 according to memory. It will accommodate from 500 to 2000 songs. Unfortunately, it does not have an elaboration slot so that you are restricted to the onboard memory.

This MP3 player has a number of other welcome features. It plays MP3, WMA, and WMA file formats. It is likewise an FM radio tuner with 40 presets. It has an internal rechargeable battery that gives up to 15 hours of service. The Clip is likewise a voice recorder with a built-in microphone so that it makes a nice little memo taker. Sorry, you can not view photos or watch videos on the diminutive Clip.

It requires Windows XP SP2 or Vista operating systems and connects by way of a USB mini-port cable, which I be grateful for because it means that you have to pack less cables when you are on the road. I wish that mini-USB connectors were universal. No goofy proprietary connectors allowed!

In the box, you get the player, a detachable clip, a USB cable, earphones, quick start out guide, and an installation CD with user guide.

The Clip is one of the smallest MP3 players available. It’s array of color selections make it beautiful choice and a good value for cash with it is commodious clip attachment system. My only wish would be that it have an elaboration slot.

I have many MP3 capable products and reasons why I am very fond of this little one for my new found effort. I have the following list of products and have tried my:

Nexus S (too big and heavy for running, no physical buttons)
iPod touch 4th Gen (Big, expensive at the storage size i wanted and no buttons for music controls)
iPod Nano 4thGen (little, has a clip, but why the hell can’t they include buttons?)
iPod shuffle (not enough storage and I don’t want to mix in my metal songs from lifting weights into my up beat running songs…)

Likes:
The clip Zip sounds great, is very small, has a clip and has physical buttons.

It fits every need i want. The bonus is the MicroSD slot, I can not stress this enough. Skip the 8GB version and get the 4GB and pair it with a 16 or 32GB card. Bam 20-36GB of storage, insanely small and still clocks in under $100.

FLAC support.

Low rez color screen does what it needs to. Won’t knock people over but tells you whats playing with album art.

As for the other areas, the stop watch works like a stop watch…It keeps time and does splits. Not a huge thing and if you are using a polar watch or at a gym, the machine you are on will do just as well and be more convenient. In a pinch it works.

The FM radio works fine. I live in a rural area, so my station choices are limited. From my experience, it works just fine if you are in an area with good recption.

Dislikes:
*UPDATE* MM works on updated firmware…still broken on stock firmware. Drag and drop also works, so you have that going for you.

General gripe: The included headphones are perfect for giving to people you hate. You can use them, i guess, if you want to torture yourself, but like any MP3 player, Apple or otherwise, get some better phones…your ears and your music will appreciate it.

Considering you would need to pay twice as much for an iPod with fewer features, no physical buttons and no storage expansion, just to run in a hampster wheel, save your scratch and get this guy. You will be glad you did, as it looks good, sounds good and does a it in a small package that just screams to be used in your fitness routine.

Update of an update: A new firmware patch was released, make sure to update your new Clip Zip or you will experience the “Static Blast” between some of your songs…not fun, but it has been addressed, so make sure to update right away.

197 of 210 people found the following review helpful.
The SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip–the SanDisk Sansa Clip line further popularized for all
By mikerman
The pros:

 — all the benefits of the Clip+: great sound; small; microSD card support; FM radio (with record capability); recorder; gapless play; optional folder navigation; multiple formats support (mp3, wma, ogg vorbis, flac); file drag-and-drop capability; ad hoc playlist creation; cute and appealing

 — new: aac file support for DRM-free aac format files; small color screen with album art display; time-of-day indication; “sports mode” with timer and lap time; fast alphabet scrolling in lists; menu customizability; enhanced contemporary feel and, perhaps, sturdiness; improved microSD card fit; improved EQ

The limited cons:

 — internal memory maxes out at 8GB; limited what’s playing screen information; underlying folder art can make screen readability harder; missing some play-all options; for some users: battery life remains rated at 15 hours; no video capability; greater functionality could be provided to the user (could be handled in future firmware upgrades)

The Clip Zip, the latest in the SanDisk Sansa Clip line, is firmly committed to the Clip line’s proven success: a small, cute and attractive, easy-to-use player with great sound. Not much more can be said about the sound: SanDisk got it right with the original Clip and wisely has not tinkered with that, keeping the Clip line at the top of the audio player field. With one exception: while the Clip Zip’s EQ options sound improved to my ears, they still can sound harsh–as a general matter, best to leave the EQ options alone.

Physically, the Clip Zip is only a trifle larger than its predecessor, in its long dimension. As before, the body is an attractive, sturdy 2-piece plastic shell that angles out, with a large, permanently attached, sturdy plastic clip occupying its back. The one-piece directional pad on the front of the Clip Zip has been reduced in size to the bottom third of the player’s face, with a thin, rectangular select button in its center–some larger-fingered users may have to exercise some care. An inset postage stamp-sized screen occupies the top half of the face of the player. Available in a variety of pleasing colors, my player is an attractive platinum color with a silver-colored directional pad and silver volume rocker and power switches at the left and top sides. The headphone jack remains on the top right side of the player, with a microSD card slot below that, at the bottom; an inserted microSD card now sits totally flush with the player, helping to avoid any inadvertent ejection (although this could make removing the card a trifle more difficult for some). The Clip Zip adopts the micro USB standard for its data and power port at the top left of the player, and comes with a handy short USB/micro USB cable.

In the end, the Clip Zip has a perhaps slightly more contemporary, and sturdy, feel than before, including with its modernized screen graphics and opening and closing exploding screen logo. SanDisk includes with the player a pair of its standard earbud headphones, which many users like–I swap them out for audiophile in-ear phones that complement the player’s well-tuned sound.

Beyond these basics, the Clip Zip, like the earlier Clip+, includes microSD card support, making it possible to increase the player’s storage five-fold from its maximum 8GB internal storage to a total of 40GB, with a 32GB microSD card. Amazing, for something so small; microSD card slots should be standard in all audio players. All content nicely is seamlessly merged in the Clip Zip’s database, or separately can be accessed by folder, as on a computer. The Clip Zip also includes a well-functioning FM radio, with presets and recording capability; new, the display automatically shows the currently-selected radio station’s call letters. As before, the Clip Zip has a recorder; gapless play between files–a necessity for live performance recordings; simple drag-and-drop file transfer capability as well as compatibility with music players and aggregators like Windows Media Player; and ad hoc playlist creation (limited to a current, temporary playlist). The Clip Zip also continues Replaygain support to equalize volume between files, and speed control (slow, normal, fast) for podcasts and audiobooks (but, unfortunately, without pitch adjustment, which would be a welcome addition).

With this pedigree in hand, the Clip Zip then takes off. Firmly inviting iTunes users in, the Clip Zip now is compatible with DRM-free aac files (the iTunes standard), in addition to, as before, mp3, wma, protected wma, ogg vorbis and flac formats; iTunes users no longer need convert their aac files (hurting it in the process) to mp3 format. Reflecting the visual age, the Clip Zip trades in the mostly monochrome, text-oriented small screen of its predecessors for a full (albeit postage stamp-sized), well-functioning color screen with album art display and muted album art backgrounds; where album art is not available, the Clip Zip substitutes varying tasteful designs rather than a dry, static picture (no more pictures of a music note for album art-less files). And then, perhaps listening to its audience’s earlier suggestions, SanDisk adds in the time-of-day to the player’s what’s playing screen (many thanks!); a “sports mode” with timer and lap time; fast alphabetical scrolling for content lists–very welcome for those users with lots of content; and the (limited) ability to customize the Clip Zip’s top menu to show or exclude function categories (Music, Radio, Books, Voice, Card, Sport).

Users of earlier Clip players will find the operation of the Clip Zip familiar, and largely instinctual. Newcomers will adapt in minutes.

All of this is done in an evolutionary manner, still within the Clip lineage; this is not a new player line. Some users will be disappointed by the 8GB internal memory ceiling; 16GB and 32GB models would be appreciated at this point in time–as well as beyond that for us jukebox users. The player’s battery remains rated at 15-hours, typically enough for a full day, but some users would like more; the battery is not user replaceable, given the player’s size (some users would prefer otherwise). And there is no video capability (although this only would be minimally useful, given the small screen–but it still would be welcome).

Seemingly as a result of the adoption of album art display, some informational functionality has been lessened on the Clip Zip’s what’s playing screen: there is no current track number and total tracks information; the current song/file time position is only indicated by a progress bar–there are no elapsed or remaining time indicators; and some of the on-screen information can be a bit harder to see, depending on underlying album art. Also, for some reason, a play-all option, apart from in shuffled mode, has gone missing from most of the playback options–album aficionados will be limited to choosing 1 album at a time or creating playlists. These issues are important for many users–perhaps (hopefully) SanDisk will consider them for future firmware upgrades. (Speaking of which: how about a separate time screen with a clock face, with a few style options?) And the database hindrance from earlier Clip models remains: when files are added to or removed from the microSD card or the card is removed and replaced, the Clip Zip needs to refresh its database, which can take many minutes, depending on the size of the card’s contents, during which the player cannot otherwise be used.

In the end, despite some limitations (some of which could be addressed in the future), the Clip Zip is an attractive successor in the Clip line, with enhanced functionality especially of note for those with a library of aac files and for those wanting album art or timing capabilities.

9-12-11 UPDATE as to Audible compatibility with the Clip Zip:

Apparently, people have been finding it impossible to transfer Audible audiobooks to the Clip Zip. In trying myself, I found the same thing–frustrating! In following up, it turns out that Audible needs to update its Audible Manager software, used to transfer Audible audiobooks, etc. to a device, and is working on it. In the meanwhile, see the comments section below for a couple of easy ways to transfer Audible content to the Clip Zip: simple drag-and-drop/copy-and-paste; or using Windows Media Player. In fact, personally, I actually prefer using the drag-and-drop method to having to fire up the Audible Manager just to transfer content over–simpler.

206 of 227 people found the following review helpful.
Doesn’t play audiobooks well
By M. Herbst
The Sansa Clip Zip sounded like just what I wanted — a small, inexpensive, clip-on mp3 player to use while I exercise. I was wrong. I listen to audiobooks while I exercise, and despite Sansa’s product description the Clip Zip doesn’t do that.

When I manually load audiobook mp3 files on the Clip Zip, it classifies them as songs on different albums by one artist. If I select “artist” it plays all the ‘track #1s’ in sequence and then all the ‘track #2s’, etc. If I choose “album” it plays that set of files but then I have to search around for the next cryptically-named “album” in the book. That works, sort of, but who wants to stop exercising to fiddle around with an mp3 player for 10 minutes searching for the next section of a book?

When I use Windows Media Player to make a playlist of an audiobook’s tracks and then sync them with the Sansa, the process fails — no playlist is on the Sansa and the book is organized exactly as it was using drag-and-drop.

Same thing happens with iTunes, except iTunes itself crashes half the time too.

Audible.com books? Sorry, the audible format is not supported.

If you want to listen to music on a cheap mp3 player, buy the Clip Zip. If you want to play an audiobook, forget about it — it’s useless.

Addendum:
Several people have offered comments and work-arounds that have been very helpful. First of all, the problem with Audible compatibility apparently belongs to Audible.com, not SanDisk. Second, Windows Media Player does work with the Clip Zip. Third, even without built-in Audible support, you can manually add Audible books to the Clip Zip.

I’ve added one star to my rating. It’s OK as it is now and when Audible.com (an Amazon subsidiary, BTW) changes the Audible Manager it should move up to “pretty good” rating — actually a “good for the price” rating.

Second addendum (December 15, 2011):
1) I’m told that Audible.com now supports this device.
2) There’s a workaround for the problem I had with playing mp3 audiobooks. Both Andy Sexton and John R. Ridley came up with the workaround and posted it in the comments to this review. Quoting Mr. Ridley: “If you put audiobooks into the audiobook folder, or set the genre in the MP3 tags as “AUDIOBOOK” the Clip Zip will handle them properly, with proper resume points and no need to make playlists or anything.” Thank you Andy and John!

Software

iPod Capabilities include playing:

1. MP3 audio file formats.

2. WAV audio file formats.

3.M4A / AAC LC audio file formats.

4. Protected AAC audio file formats.

5. AIFF audio file formats.

6. Audible audiobook audio file formats and

7. Apple Lossless audio file formats.

iPod capablenesses of the 5th generation version plays .m4v and .mp4 MPEG-4 video file formats.

Microsoft Windows version of iTunes may transcode regular non copy-protected WMA files to an

iPod supported format. WMA files with copy shelter cannot be played in iTunes or be copied to an iPod.

What I do not like when it comes to the iPod is the disability to play galore other formats, in peculiar the Ogg Vorbis and FLAC formats. MIDI files cannot be played on iPods as well, but may be converted into a compatible audio file format by choosing the “advanced” menu on iTunes.

Apple has designed the iPod to work with the iTunes media library software, which lets you manage your music libraries on your computer and on your iPod. iTunes may mechanically synchronize your iPod with specific playlists or with the entire contents of a music library each time you connect your iPod to a host computer.

You may likewise set a rating (out of 5 stars) on any song, and may synchronize that data to an iTunes music library. iTunes lacks the capacity to transfer songs from iPod to computer because of legality issues.

However, various third-party programs subsist that provide music synchronization facilities similar to iTunes, but likewise offer the capacity to copy music from iPod back to your host computer. Notable examples include vPod and the Ml iPod plugin for Winamp.

iTunes Music Store

The iTunes Music Store (iTMS) is an online music store run by Apple and accessed by way of iTunes. It was

introduced on 28 April, 2003 and sells person songs comparatively without apparent effort and cheaply (e.g. 0.99 USD,

0.99 Euro, 0.79 GBP).

iPod’s are the only portable music player that may play the purchased music, and this exclusiveness has

helped the store become the dominant online music service.

The purchased audio files use the AAC format with added encryption. The encryption is based on FairPlay Digital Rights Management (DRM) system. Up to five authorized computers and an unlimited amount of iPods may play the files.

Burning the files onto an audio CD removes the Digital Rights Management (DRM), at a cost of scaled down

quality when re-compressed from one lossy format to another.

iPods can not play music files encrypted with other rival Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies,

such as Microsoft’s protected WMA or RealNetworks’ Helix-DRM.

Hardware

iPod capablenesses was to connect it to a user’s computer to update songs and recharge it is battery solely

through FireWire originally. It could likewise be charged by connecting it to a little power adapter which are shipped for free with various of the firstborn generation iPod’s.

The now usual dock connector was not added until the 3rd generation in April 2003, permitting users

the option of using FireWire or USB to make data transfers, though the device could still not be

charged by USB and the USB cable was not included.

Most PC’s don’t have FireWire ports so this move efficaciously opened the Windows market to iPod, though USB only Windows users had to keep their FireWire cables to plug into the wall adapter.

The dock connector likewise made it possible to transfer data, sound, and power back and forth to iPod accesories, which produced an explosive market of widgets that has been exceedingly profitable for third parties such as Belkin and Griffin. The resulting myriad of connecting widgets is still one of iPod’s greatest amount of energy over it is competititors.

iPod capablenesses of the 4th generation version could be charged with USB, and finally Apple started shipping iPods with USB cables rather of one’s with FireWire. Many Macs shipped before 2004 had only USB 1.1, which has a transfer speed of 11 Mbit/s, as opposed to FireWire’s 400 and USB 2.0′s 480.

Although none of these genuinely transfers at these precise rates, USB 1.1 is much slower than the other two, and for a great deal of USB 1.1 may merely be unusable for transferring music collections to fill a 40 GB iPod. Later introductions has continued to lessen iPod’s reliance on FireWire.

iPod Shuffle, freed in January 2005, plugs directly into a USB port, without a dock connector and has no Firewire support. The iPod Nano, freed in September 2005, uses a dock connector that allows a FireWire cable to be plugged in to charge the device, but not to transfer data. With the 5th generation iPod, Apple dropped all support for selective information transfer over Firewire to any model iPod.

Like the Nano, the 5th generation iPod’s dock connector will receive a FireWire cable and may draw power from it, but only the USB connection, not the one with FireWire, will aid selective information transfer – a message stating this appears on the iPod screen.

This has drawn a good deal of criticism from the Mac community, since FireWire has been a standard feature on Apple Macs for a heap of years, while USB 2.0 support was only added in October 2003.

The introductory three generations of iPod employed two ARM 7TDMI-derived CPUs running at 90 MHz, while later models have variable speed chips which run at a peak of 80 MHz to save battery life.

The iPod use 1.8 inch (46 mm) ATA hard drives (with a proprietary connector) made by Toshiba and the iPod Mini uses one-inch Compact Flash microdrive hard drives made by Hitachi. It has a 32 MiB flash ROM chip which holds a bootloader, a program that tells the device to load the operating scheme from another medium (in this case, the hard drive).

All iPods, except for the 60 GB 5th generation version, has 32 MiB of RAM, a portion of which holds the OS loaded from the firmware and the vast majority of which serves to cache songs loaded from the hard drive.

For example, an iPod could spun the hard disk up once and copy regarding 30 MiB of upcoming songs on a playlist into RAM, thence saving power by not having the drive spun up for each song. (The 60 GB fifth-generation iPod holds 64 MiB of RAM, to further extend battery life.)

iPod was in the first place introduced with a black and white display but no current model uses one. iPod Photo (an addition to the functionality of the 4th generation iPod freed in late 2004) introduced a color screen, while iPod shuffle (released January 2005) has no screen at all.

When iPod Mini was substituted with iPod Nano it received a colour screen (and photo capabilty) and starting with the 5th generation all full size iPods have color screens and photo capability.

H Shamp
I bought a cheap yamaha keyboard about 6 years ago. It had the option of midi connection with computers, but at the time Yamaha wanted like half the price of the keyboard for the connecting cord! So I didn’t get it. Now I was looking at this and the price is such a steal in comparison I thought I would try it. It worked! I have a piano program, and the cord connects to both my Vista computer and my XP computer without trouble — just plug it in. Remember to plug the “In” into the “Out” and vise versa. It comes with instructions specially says to do that, and I messed up anyway. Silly me.

Good deal, I recommend it. But do remember that you need a piano program to make things happen, the same way you need a word processing program or something before you can type something on the computer with a normal typing keyboard. You can find freeware piano keyboard software such as Anvil Studio on the internet.

Everything works without problems. And the price point is remarkable! Most of these adapters seem to cost around $40-50, so this is quite a deal.

And yes, you need to plug the end that says “MIDI Out” into your “MIDI In” socket on your keyboard, but that’s how it always is with MIDI…

So my problems:

1. The device does not handle run-on MIDI commands properly. I doubt that many modern MIDI devices use run-on commands, as they were a somewhat confusing bit-saving mechanism from the 20th century. The keyboard I used was a Kurzweil SP-88. I suspect this is a design-defect in the product. More on this below.

2. The device would not enumerate on my main PC. That box is a custom-built machine using a P5B Deluxe motherboard which has never had any problems with any other USB devices. I even tried clocking the box down to normal speeds; Vista gives me a vague error about the device malfunctioning, and Ubuntu gives me a read error during enumeration in dmesg (which, to be fair, wasn’t any more useful in this context.)

3. For all the reviewers who said the cable was labeled backwards: MIDI cables are always connected so that the “OUT” of one device goes to the “IN” of another device. MIDI supports a ring-shaped daisy-chain of devices that way. This cable was not labeled backwards.

Elaborating on point 1:

On the wrong equipment, when you do this:
1. Press-and-hold key1.
2. Press-and-hold key2.
3. Release key1.
4. Release key2.

You get this:
1. Press-and-hold key1.
2. Press-and-hold key2.
3. Release key1.
4. Press-and-hold key2 again.

For those technically inclined, here’s the data stream from my SP-88 using the old serial cable I was replacing (I had to resurrect a dead machine to get this; I’m forging note velocities for easier comparison):
90 40 45 3c 48 80 40 62 3c 61

Here’s what this product read:
90 40 45 90 3c 48 80 40 62 90 3c 61

Here’s the nearest valid sequence it could have provided:
90 40 45 90 3c 48 80 40 62 80 3c 61

Note the 80 instead of 90 in the third-to-last byte – “80″ means “note off”, “90″ means “note on”. This was a deal-killer for me; your mileage may vary.

I replaced the cable with an M-Audio cable from a local shop for 3x the price; that cable also reprocesses run-on commands, but does it appropriately (the third sequence above is what I would get.)

The seller was courteous and provided a full refund, including shipping, so all I lost to them was time. I’d buy from these guys again, just not this product.

I’ll commence this review by disclosing that I’m no expert when it comes to electronics. I’ve been using the earphones that came with my iPod until receiving the Lift Audio Icon Series 6 mm Premium Earphones (Black) from the Amazon Vine program. So, this is only my second pair of earphones for my iPod and my basi impression is that I in truth like them.

First, I’ll mention the case that comes with them. It’s a little zippered hard shell nylon case of with regards to three inches across. It opens up like a clam shell and inside both sides have mesh pockets. The two spare silicone fittings fit nicely in one side. Maybe I shouldn’t say spare, since they are actually alternatives. The earphones come with three sizes of the silicone fitting, so the other two sizes fit nicely into the one side’s pocket. The earphones and cord fold up to fit in the case, and on the outside there is a little carabiner clip so you may clip them to whatever. It’s a nice little case, but I’m not genuinely sure how much I’ll use it, since I commonly just leave the earphones attached to the iPod. We’ll see.

The earphones themselves are comfortable and fit snuggly back into the ear. They do a good occupation of blocking out outside noise. Again, I’m not an expert in this area, but I thought the sound was very good. I listened to a potpourri of styles of music that I have in my iPod, Country, Rock, Classical, New Age, Soundtracks, and so forth, and they all sounded good to me. I have not had the black silicone fittings fall off, but I do have a concern that when they get old, etc. how much to replace them, or do I need to get an entire new set. Some humans have indicated they are hard to find when they fall off. I’m hoping I don’t learn that original hand.

The cord is another thing that was dissimilar than what I was used to. It is covered by a heap of kind of fabric, rather than the plastic I was intimate with. It doesn’t kink up like the plastic covered ones do. I liked this, but there is a little problem of when the cord is rubbed, it sounds like an individual blowing into a microphone in your ears. So if you are moving your head around a lot, and the cord is rubbing along your face, it distorts the sound of your music some.

Overall, I actually like them. They would be a bit costly if you paid the merchandising of $79.99, but the amazon price of $34.99 is not too far fetched equated to other higher end earphones. Earphones are sort of personal to people, and every one has their favorites for dissimilar reasons. I like these premium earphones from Lift Audio and think they do a very good occupation at being comfortable and supplying outstanding sound.

Lambert
Okay, I figured I was wasting 15 bucks purchasing this clip when I knew I could just use a clip with the lanyard on my Garmin. I was wrong. I just got back from a 12-day trek in the mountains of New Mexico and I loved the way this clip allowed me to place my GPS wherever I wanted it on my backpack or my belt with no effort. The clip is super light weight, and it really helps to locate your hiking equipment where it needs to be located.

(If you are holding the carabiner on your finger, the device is upright, so when you hook it onto a belt loop and rotate the device toward you, it is now upside-down.) If you don’t mind viewing your map in this way while you’re trying to navigate to something then I suppose it might be not bother you, but that doesn’t work out so well for me.

It’s too bad because it is sturdy and the carabiner itself is fairly decent quality, but for me the only way it would be really useful is if it the carabiner hung off toward the bottom of the device.

Software

iPod Capabilities include playing:

1. MP3 audio file formats.

2. WAV audio file formats.

3.M4A / AAC LC audio file formats.

4. Protected AAC audio file formats.

5. AIFF audio file formats.

6. Audible audiobook audio file formats and

7. Apple Lossless audio file formats.

iPod capablenesses of the 5th generation version plays .m4v and .mp4 MPEG-4 video file formats.

Microsoft Windows version of iTunes may transcode regular non copy-protected WMA files to an

iPod supported format. WMA files with copy shelter can not be played in iTunes or be copied to an iPod.

What I do not like when it comes to the iPod is the disability to play some other formats, in peculiar the Ogg Vorbis and FLAC formats.

You may also set a rating (out of 5 stars) on any song, and may synchronize that data to an iTunes music library. iTunes lacks the capacity to transfer songs from iPod to computer because of legality issues.

However, various third-party programs subsist that provide music synchronization facilities similar to iTunes, but also offer the capacity to copy music from iPod back to your host computer. Notable examples include vPod and the Ml iPod plugin for Winamp.

iTunes Music Store

The iTunes Music Store (iTMS) is an online music store run by Apple and accessed by way of iTunes. It was

introduced on 28 April, 2003 and sells person songs comparatively effortlessly and cheaply (e.g.

Burning the files onto an audio CD removes the Digital Rights Management (DRM), at a cost of scaled down

quality when re-compressed from one lossy format to another.

iPods cannot play music files encrypted with other rival Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies,

such as Microsoft’s protected WMA or RealNetworks’ Helix-DRM.

Hardware

iPod capablenesses was to connect it to a user’s computer to update songs and recharge it is battery solely

through FireWire originally. It could likewise be charged by connecting it to a little power adapter which are shipped for free with various of the original generation iPod’s.

The now general dock connector was not added until the 3rd generation in April 2003, permitting users

the option of using FireWire or USB to make data transfers, altho the device could still not be

charged by USB and the USB cable was not included.

Most PC’s don’t have FireWire ports so this move efficaciously opened the Windows market to iPod, even though USB only Windows users had to keep their FireWire cables to plug into the wall adapter.

The dock connector also made it possible to transfer data, sound, and power back and forth to iPod accesories, which devised an explosive market of gadgets that has been exceedingly profitable for third parties such as Belkin and Griffin. The resulting myriad of connecting widgets is still one of iPod’s greatest intensities over it is competititors.

iPod capablenesses of the 4th generation version could be charged with USB, and at long last Apple started shipping iPods with USB cables rather of one’s with FireWire. Many Macs shipped before 2004 had only USB 1.1, which has a transfer speed of 11 Mbit/s, as opposed to FireWire’s 400 and USB 2.0′s 480.

Although none of these actually transfers at these precise rates, USB 1.1 is much slower than the other two, and for a lot of USB 1.1 may merely be unusable for transferring music collections to fill a 40 GB iPod.

With the 5th generation iPod, Apple dropped all aid for selective information transfer over Firewire to any model iPod.

Like the Nano, the 5th generation iPod’s dock connector will receive a FireWire cable and may draw power from it, but only the USB connection, not the one with FireWire, will support data transfer – a message stating this appears on the iPod screen.

This has drawn some criticism from the Mac community, since FireWire has been a usual feature on Apple Macs for a great deal of years, while USB 2.0 help was only added in October 2003.

The original three generations of iPod applied two ARM 7TDMI-derived CPUs running at 90 MHz, while later models have variable speed chips which run at a peak of 80 MHz to save battery life.

The iPod use 1.8 inch (46 mm) ATA hard drives (with a proprietary connector) made by Toshiba and the iPod Mini uses one-inch Compact Flash microdrive hard drives made by Hitachi. It has a 32 MiB flash ROM chip which holds a bootloader, a program that tells the device to load the operating system from another medium (in this case, the hard drive).

All iPods, except for the 60 GB 5th generation version, has 32 MiB of RAM, a part of which holds the OS loaded from the firmware and the vast majority of which serves to cache songs loaded from the hard drive.

For example, an iPod could spun the hard disk up once and copy in regards to 30 MiB of upcoming songs on a playlist into RAM, therefore saving power by not having the drive spun up for each song.

I think the new Nano makes the extreme runner gift. It is so little that I may fit it inside the key pocket of my running shorts. And, believe it or not, it takes great video! I shot video for the duration of the Marine Corps Marathon with my Nano and uploaded it to YouTube. How cool is that?

I always have my iPod with me when I race anyway; now, I may shoot video at the commence line of the final stimulating pre-race moments with my friends, and then I may shoot video right after we finish when we are all expended but happy. Those are the best videos because there is so much emotion. I just love it.

I also like to download podcasts regarding running. One podcast I always download is Running Times Magazine. Scott Douglas consultations a dissimilar famous runner or coach each week. Another podcast I take delight in is NPR’s Sunday Puzzle. Since I love word puzzles, that one is always entertaining. With all the thousands of free podcasts available, it is not hard for anybody to find a great deal of that they would like to hear.

I ofttimes listen to audiobooks while I run. This is in particular helpful on longer training runs. I buy audiobooks and download them to my Nano. I have listened to “The Da Vinci Code,” “Animals in Translation,” “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle,” “Into Thin Air,” “The Secret Life of Bees,” and “The Life of Pi.” Wouldn’t it be outstanding to upload a couple of books to the Nano before you give it as a gift? In that sense, you would be giving two gifts.

Another idea is that you may load it up with a playlist of your bestloved running music, another good way to personalize the gift and show someone how much you care. The final reason an iPod makes a nice gift is that it may be engraved, a nice touch. My husband gave me a new Nano for my birthday, and he had it engraved. I didn’t think I necessitated a new iPod because I had one of the introductory ones, but I have to confess I have loved having this newer, littler model with it is added functionality.

Now, of course, I realize there are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of MP3 players on the market. I prefer the Nano, but I recognise there are a lot of other similar products. I suggest asking other runners to commend a unit they have found dependable and functional. A major contemplation here is that it needs to be easy to use. Small is great, but I don’t think I would want anything littler than the Nano, for example, because it would just be too hard to see what you are doing and hit the right button while running.

A Running Watch with GPS

Garmin makes magnificent GPS enabled running watches. I highly commend the Garmin Forerunner 205, 305, or 405. One cautionary note, though. They don’t like sweat, so if the running you are buying for is a heavy sweater, suggest wearing a wrist sweatband beneath it. I have the Garmin 205, and it has served me well. For years, when I went for a long run, I’d have to drive it off before or after my run to check the distance. With my Garmin, I never have to give that a thought. Also, of course, I love being capable to look down and check my speed. The reason I commend the 405 is because it is littler on the wrist; it looks more like a wrist watch, and it has the added feature that it displays intermediate speed. That’s nice, but it is more pricey. I plan to buy a Garmin 310XT soon. It is waterproof, so it will be outstanding for triathlons. Some Garmin models are heart rate monitors as well, and that is a valuable added feature.

Heart Rate Monitor

These serve two main purposes. One, is that they concede you to make sure you are working at the suitable level. If you are supposed to be doing a sure level of difficultness when you are doing speedwork, the watch, in fact, the heart, does not lie. You recognise your unfeigned effort. The second gain is as a control device, an even larger benefit, I think. You may make sure you are not running too hard, putting out too much effort, when you are on an easy run. Indeed, overtraining, is at least as much of a problem as undertraining. For this reason, each runner will have to use a heart rate monitor to control effort expended on easy training days because too much crusade expended on an ‘easy’ training day will impede progression toward dandier fitness.

Shoes

What runner doesn’t want new shoes? This is a good time to get that runner the pair he or she has been drooling over. You know, I mean that pair that is just a bit more costly than the shoes that person normally buys. Every runner will have to always have at least two pair of running shoes and alternate among them. That way the shoes have time to arid out and decompress among runs. And consider that shoes must be substituted in regards to each 500 miles. A runner may never have too galore shoes. Another idea would be to give a pair of off road or trail shoes. And if the runner you are buying goods for does shorter distance races, he or she might like to have a pair of racing flats.

Vibram Five Finger Shoes

These shoes is worthy of a discerned mention because they are wild. They are the nearest thing to running barefoot and actually concede the wearer to feel the trail while still supplying protection. I love them; however, I don’t inevitably commend them for running. I plan to get a pair myself and experiment, but I will be VERY careful and only run off road with them; and even then, I plan to commence out with only like one tenth of a mile. That said, these shoes are fantasti for just wearing around, and for yoga, etc. I have tried them on and they are genuinely NEAT.

Crocs

These strange shoes is worthy of a distinguished mention as well. If the runner you are buying goods for does not have a pair, this would be a valuable and very inexpensive gift. Of course, you would never run in these shoes. No, I am recommending them as the idealisti shoe to put on after a long run or race, because they provide greatest or most complete or best possible cushioning and ventilation for tired feet. Now, galore persons don’t like the way these look; they’re not incisively sporty or stylish, but for ease and practicality they are a ‘must have,’ for runners. Due to the air holes and the loose way they are designed to fit, Crocs provide optimal ventilation, and the soles are just one thick cushion. I did a half marathon with assorted of my friends yesterday. After the race, we all happily kicked off our running shoes and donned our Crocs for the ride home. Oh, that felt good.

Audible.com

An Audible.com gift certificate would be utile for any person who runs with an MP3 player. I have been a subscriber for years. I recompense a on a monthly basis fee, and that buys me two book credits. It’s outstanding to be competent to search Audible’s massive library of MP3′s of books. I always find a great deal of options, and I love listening when I am running. Many times I have run a little further than I planned or added on a mile of walking because the book was so good that I didn’t want to stop listening. One book might last as much as ten hours; that’s a lot of entertainment, and it in truth gives me a reason to look forward to my next run. Since it is a gift certificate, it may effortlessly be purchased online, a good last minute gift option.

Massages

Ooh la la! Wouldn’t any runner want a massage — or two — or three? Massages are not just for pleasure. They support get runners primed for races, and afterwards, they support with recovery. But, hey, who needs a reason for a massage? Yes, a massage gift certificate is ideal, but ask around and make sure to find a licensed massage therapist with an splendid reputation among runners. Again, this may now and then be handled altogether online if the therapist has a website.

The Stick

This handy gadget is very effective for massaging sore muscles and working out cramps. Every runner ought to have one. It is an inexpensive but valuable gift.

Running Apparel

Find out what kind of running shorts the person likes, and get a couple more pair just like them but in dissimilar colors. Most of us have our favorites and would love a couple more before the manufacturer changes the style, like they always do. The most frequent shorts out now seem to be Nike’s Tempo shorts. If you don’t know what style to get, this is your safest bet. In a recent half marathon, I looked around and counted ten other persons wearing Nike Tempo shorts. (Well, you have to do something for amusement on a long run.) A lightweight running jacket would be nice at this time of year, too, exceptionally in cold climates.

Music

Give the gift of music with a gift certificate for iTunes. This could last well into the new year. Most of us steadily download new running music, and the gift certificate could likewise be applied to download audiobooks. A outstanding thing when it comes to this gift is that it may purchased online. This is an idealisti last minute gift option.

Hats, Caps, Visors

Many runners wear hats or visors a lot of or all of the year, and it is nice to have several, so this is always a good option. Many people wear them to keep warm in the cooler months, but lots of persons like to wear them allround the year to keep their hair out of the way. I wear a visor each time I run, so runners like me like to have at least several.

Yoga

How with regards to a gift certificate to a yoga studio? All runners would gain from yoga, but most times the added expense is prohibitive. If the runner you’re buying for already has a membership to a yoga studio, why not get that person a yoga mat? It is in truth nice to have your own.

Socks

Runners need lots of socks, and good socks are expensive. It is also fun to give amusive socks. A runner can’t have too many.

Hydration Packs

Everybody now and again has to run in places where there is no drinking water available. On a long run, a hydration pack is a necessity. Amphipod and Nathan offer a assortment of models. This is an exceptionally helpful gift for a trail runner or marathoner.

Books

There are hundreds of books regarding running, and most runners are mesmerized to read galore famous runner’s philosophy. An magnificent book that came out in the last couple of months is Christopher McDougall’s Born to Run. I’ve just started reading it, and so far it is fascinating. If you don’t recognise what book to buy, I commend any of the books published by Runner’s World Magazine, and two writers to look for are Jeff Galloway and John Bingham. Another idea is Running with the Legends by Michael Sandrock. There are a large total of outstanding options, though. Along these same lines, Runner’s World puts out a calendar; I get one each year. It plainly has photos of runners, but it also includes a pace chart and a good deal of running tips throughout.

Number Belt or Joey Pouch

A number belt is handy, particularly for triathletes. Any runner might like to have one, though, because it enables the runner to stop putting holes in their shorts when attaching a race number. I have a Joey Pouch that I love. Essentially, it is a pouch/pocket that is attached to an elastic waistband. I may put my phone, a few gels, and keys in it when I run. There are various dissimilar brands being made, and your local running store is likely to carry at least one of them. These is actually helpful because, amazingly, some makers do not put a pocket in running shorts.

Headlamp

Many runners are forced to run in the dark, either in the early morning hours or in the evening. For these runners a headlamp is ideal. Just a few weeks ago I took a tumble when I was running after dark, and I didn’t see a spot where the sidewalk had lifted up over a tree root. It wasn’t pretty. One moment I was happily chatting away with my running buddy, and the next moment I was skidding on concrete. I came away with two skinned knees, painful palms, and a desire to get the very best headlamp on the market. I have seen persons carrying flashlights, but in truth a headlamp seems like a much better idea.

Runner Specific First Aid Kit

Why not put together a introductory support kit as a gift? It would not be highpriced but would demonstrate how much you care. Essential items: band-aids (the flexible fabric kind), Neosporin or any antibiotic ointment, an ace bandage, nail scissors, cotton swabs, gauze pads, adhesive tape, Q tips, an ice pack (the kind activated by a chemical reaction), a little wash cloth, tweezers

Florescent Vest

For the same reasons as stated above, a vest with fluorescent stripes would be a outstanding idea. I’ve seen a great deal of that say “RUNNER” and that is a nice touch. This gift could save a life, and it costs with regards to $20.

Amphipod Pockets

I have two Amphipod Pockets, and I love them. They have a metal clip that clips onto the waistband of running shorts. Excellent for keys, phone, iPod, etc. Every runner must have one of these.

Compression Socks

I don’t recognise if these work or not, but I’ve seen a large total of runners using them. The runner you’re buying for might like to give them a try.

Stocking Stuffers

Load up on GU, Shot Blox, Jelly Beans, Power Bars, etc. Again socks are good for this. How when it comes to a key container that may be attached to the shoe? Shoe inserts may cost upwards of $20, but they may extend the life of a pair of shoes, and they likewise make them fit better. You can’t go wrong with this.

Balance Board

I have one of these. It is outstanding for loosening up ankles before and after a run, and it is also beneficial for working on balance, an often times overlooking element of conditioning. I’ve been using it for various years. At primary I just thought of it as being a way to improve balance, but I soon learned that it feels outstanding to just roll it around in a circle motion to loosen up my ankle joints in a controlled, safe fashion; it’s kind of like if someone took your foot in their hand and gently rotated it around to the comfortable extent of your range of motion. I hope that explains what I mean.

Some humans would say running is a sport that doesn’t require a lot of gear, but if you ask a runner, we would in all probability all disagree. The thing is that some of it likewise has a fixed life, shoes, for example. And even watches and electronics will in the end need to be substituted in lieu of newer, fancier models. Also, let’s face it, runners sweat a lot, and that in the long run ruins lots of gear. At my internetlocation I explain the respective training methods and procedures, which would help to explain how a heap of of these items may be employed by any runner. Now, get out there and get shopping. I hope this helped.

I was enamored by the Nike+ipod capabilities, almost to the point of buying the ‘special’ Nikes until I saw this product. The shoe pouch just straps into your shoelaces. It’s great to be able to put on the shoes that are most fitting and get the benefits of the Nike+ program as well.

Y. L.
Finally!
I was hesitant about spending money on a new pair of running shoes just so that I could use my Nike+ with my ipod. So when my husband bought me a pair of Nike+ I really wanted to like them. Unfortunately they just weren’t as comfortable as my regular running shoes. After trying a few different pairs I gave up. I saw an ad for a shoe pouch for the sensor that looked about the same size as the shoe pouch that I already had, so I tried it. It worked but the accuracy was way off. The pouch was so big that the sensor bounced around too much and only 9 out of the 10 miles that I ran were measured. Oddly enough my husband had the same trouble when he was running with his Nike+ shoes. I thought maybe the sensor was bad, but once I got my Shoe Pouch and took it to the track I found that it was far more accurate than the bigger pouch and even the shoes. I don’t know why the shoes wouldn’t work, but that’s just one person’s experience!
Thanks

Software

iPod Capabilities include playing:

1. MP3 audio file formats.

2. WAV audio file formats.

3.M4A / AAC LC audio file formats.

4. Protected AAC audio file formats.

5. AIFF audio file formats.

6. Audible audiobook audio file formats and

7. Apple Lossless audio file formats.

iPod capablenesses of the 5th generation version plays .m4v and .mp4 MPEG-4 video file formats.

Microsoft Windows version of iTunes may transcode regular non copy-protected WMA files to an

iPod supported format. WMA files with copy shelter can not be played in iTunes or be copied to an iPod.

What I do not like in regards to the iPod is the disability to play galore other formats, in queer the Ogg Vorbis and FLAC formats.

However, assorted third-party programs subsist that provide music synchronization facilities similar to iTunes, but likewise offer the capacity to copy music from iPod back to your host computer.

Up to five authorized computers and an limitless amount of iPods may play the files.

It could also be charged by connecting it to a little power adapter which are shipped for free with assorted of the primary generation iPod’s.

The now usual dock connector was not added until the 3rd generation in April 2003, permitting users

the option of using FireWire or USB to make info transfers, even though the device could still not be

charged by USB and the USB cable was not included.

Most PC’s don’t have FireWire ports so this move efficaciously opened the Windows market to iPod, though USB only Windows users had to keep their FireWire cables to plug into the wall adapter.

The dock connector likewise made it possible to transfer data, sound, and power back and forth to iPod accesories, which developed an explosive market of appliances that has been exceedingly profitable for third parties such as Belkin and Griffin. The resulting myriad of connecting gadgets is still one of iPod’s biggest amount of energy over it is competititors.

iPod capablenesses of the 4th generation version could be charged with USB, and finally Apple started shipping iPods with USB cables rather of one’s with FireWire. Many Macs shipped before 2004 had only USB 1.1, which has a transfer speed of 11 Mbit/s, as opposed to FireWire’s 400 and USB 2.0′s 480.

Although none of these in truth transfers at these precise rates, USB 1.1 is much slower than the other two, and for numerous USB 1.1 may plainly be unusable for transferring music collections to fill a 40 GB iPod.

With the 5th generation iPod, Apple dropped all aid for selective information transfer over Firewire to any model iPod.

Like the Nano, the 5th generation iPod’s dock connector will receive a FireWire cable and may draw power from it, but only the USB connection, not the one with FireWire, will aid info transfer – a message stating this appears on the iPod screen.

This has drawn galore criticism from the Mac community, since FireWire has been a frequent feature on Apple Macs for numerous years, while USB 2.0 help was only added in October 2003.

The initial three generations of iPod used two ARM 7TDMI-derived CPUs running at 90 MHz, while later models have variable speed chips which run at a peak of 80 MHz to save battery life.

All iPods, except for the 60 GB 5th generation version, has 32 MiB of RAM, a part of which holds the OS loaded from the firmware and the immense majority of which serves to cache songs loaded from the hard drive.

For example, an iPod could spun the hard disk up once and copy when it comes to 30 MiB of upcoming songs on a playlist into RAM, thence saving power by not having the drive spun up for each song.

H. Loh
This is an extremely useful product for people who want to listen to their iPods in their car.
It beats having an FM transmitter if you connect a cassette adapter to the charger’s audio jack, because then
1) Only 1 cable connects your iPod to the charger, and you get both power for the iPod and audio from the car speakers.
2) The iPod automatically goes into pause when your car (and its speakers) is turned off… something the FM transmitter cannot possibly do. This is perhaps the most underrated and undermentioned feature of the iPod and this charger. You no longer have to fiddle around with the iPod to stop it when you park your car.

Pierce
Belkin’s F8V7058-APL Auto kit (the newest auto kit from Belkin) for the IPod gets some mixed reviews.

If you’re OK with having a tried and true device then this is the car adapter for you. This mobile power cord is great and if you buy the Belkin Tunecast II IPod version, you can power the FM transmitter off of the power cord (using a 14 inch DC power cable that comes with the Tunecast II model F8V3080-APL).

It works perfectly, has a light and it has a fuse that can be easily replaced. Save yourself the money and get this rock-solid, perfectly great AC adapter. It functions exactly as you would expect.

The most noteworthy feature of the iPod Shuffle is it is physical dimensions. It’s the

same size as a pack of gum. It’s basically a memory stick.

It supports:

1. MP3 audio encoded at up to 320Kbps.

2. AAC audio encoded at up to 320Kbps.

3. Protected AAC audio from the iTunes music store.

4. Audible music format and WAV files.

5. Mac OSX v10.2.8 or Mac OSX 10.3.4

6. Microsoft Windows 2000 with SP4.

7. Windows XP Home or Professional with SP2 installed.

The ear buds that come with it are of comparatively high quality. If you plan on using

it while working out you will like the long cord and the optional armband. You may also

wear it like a necklace if you wish to.

One feature I like when it comes to this MP3 player is it supports USB 2.0, so music transfer is

very quick and easy. There are only two playback modes to choose from, random play

(thus the name Shuffle) and repeat all, which will play your play list in order and

repeat the entire collection after the last track has finished playback.

The Verdict

Apple’s iPod Shuffle is meant for any person who wants to plainly play music. I personally

purchased mine to supplement my hard drive audio based player. If you are a sports enthusiast

like I am then the iPod Shuffle will be a good choice when working out since the larger iPods

are not suitable in such environments.

The design of the iPod Shuffle and the way it sounds is fantastic and iTunes software works

great with it and it’s good at what it does (to play music). it’s a good buy and will highly commend it.

Pros:

1. Affordable equated to other MP3 players in the same range.

2. Portable, little and light weight.

3. Very easy to use.

4. Great sound quality.

Cons:

1. No LCD display.

2. No equalizer settings.

3. No voice recording.

4. No integrated FM tuner.

5. Inability to pick and choose songs or albums to play.

6. Only aid Apple iTunes software.

7. Battery is not removable.

iPod shuffle: The First Music Player that Talks to You

The World’s Smallest Music Player
To invent the world’s smallest music player, we moved the controls from iPod shuffle to the earphone cord. This makes iPod shuffle littler than ever, and the controls are right where you may reach them. So when you want to play, pause, or skip to the next tune, you don’t have to fumble for your iPod shuffle–just follow the cord and press a button.

The First Music Player that Talks to You
VoiceOver will surely be the next big hit on your iPod shuffle. Say you’re listening to a song and want to know the title or the artist. Just press a button, and VoiceOver tells you. You may even listen the names of your playlists. And when your battery needs charging, VoiceOver tells you that, too.

Easy-Access Controls
The controls are located on the right earphone cord. With command central strategically placed in this more commodious location, you may navigate your music–and activate the VoiceOver feature–without taking your eyes off your run, your ride, or whatsoever you’re doing. iPod shuffle includes these easy-access controls, but you may also use headphones with similar controls from manufacturers like Scosche, Klipsch, V-MODA, and Belkin.

Your Music Library … to Go
iPod shuffle is now available in both 2 GB and 4 GB capacities. So you have a great deal of room to store hours and hours of music–up to 1,000 songs with the 4 GB model.2 That’s a load of necessities for your workout or commute. And there’s room for multiple playlists and audiobooks, too.

Multiple Playlists
You’ve in all probability made multiple playlists in iTunes. One for your commute. One for the gym. One for just chilling out. Now you may sync playlists on your computer with iPod shuffle, and play the perfective mix for your action or mood. VoiceOver tells you the name of each playlist, so it’s easy to switch amidst them and find the one you want without looking.

Let’s Talk Color
The anodized aluminum enclosure makes iPod shuffle sleek and durable. It’s even more colorful in gleaming pink, blue, green, black, or silver. And making it is debut: the particular edition iPod shuffle in polished stainless steel (Talk when it comes to rock star treatment). Even the iPod shuffle clip rocks. It attaches securely to your shirt, jacket, workout gear, and backpack, making iPod shuffle the perfective fashion tech-cessory. And yes, there’s still room for individualized engraving.

Multiple Languages
A French love song. A Spanish bolero. An Italian cantata. Your music library has songs from all over the world. That’s why VoiceOver speaks 20 dissimilar languages. So it may tell you song titles and artists in the rectify languages.

To Shuffle or Not to Shuffle
The shuffle switch has three positions. Flip it to the left, and you’ll listen your music in a refreshingly random way. Flip it to the middle, and your songs play in order. Or flip to the right to turn iPod shuffle off.

What’s in the Box
Apple iPod shuffle 2 GB Green (4th Generation), Earphones with Remote, iPod shuffle USB Cable (1.8 inches/45 mm), Quick Start guide

Bodington
I just got my new shuffle in the mail today. I needed something for running and dreadmilling when it is too snowy/icy to run outside.
My initial impressions:

Pros
Great little thing (small)
strong clip
easy to use (hooray for buttons!)
simple, multi-position switch on the top lets you play in order or shuffle. Voice over button is easy to use and works well.
Easy to sync (choose playlists, genius playlists, albums, artists, podcasts, etc…)
Looks good (see my notes about online photos at the bottom)
Long (15h) battery life.

EDIT: A “hold” function has been added, just hold the center button to activate and deactivate, good feature. It would be useful if I had just gotten mine, but I learned how to use it without the feature so I don’t end up using hold much.

Cons
None. (As far am I concerned, there are cons like “no screen” and such, but if you order this to get an ipod shuffle, not a nano or other mp3 player, you will not be disappointed. I was not let down at all).

EDIT: After some thought and use, I thought of some cons.
$50 for 2gb is not a great price compared to other mp3 players.
2gb might be limiting to you. This just means you have to choose or let itunes choose what music goes on there carefully.
Because the buttons take up most of the front of the ipod, it can be hard to use the clip while it is turned on without pressing the next button.

Conclusion:
If you know what an ipod shuffle does, need a reasonable music player that syncs with your itunes, and don’t need more. GET ONE!!! I can’t imagine you will be let down.

One last note: From all the photos online, you can’t really tell, bu this is not a matte finish ipod. The finish is shiny, but not mirror-y. And actually, no one will care about this, but the top and bottom are matte silver. It looks good.

EDIT: 7/6/11 I put it through the wash last month, oops, but it’s still going strong!

Based on its size, portability and Apple’s marketing, you would think this would be a perfect product for exercising. That is where you would be wrong! The controls on the headphone wire are right up next to your ear, and unless you exercise without sweating, that tiny box is doomed to get filled with sweat. I bought this ipod specifically for running, but after about 3 miles the controls start acting totally erratically, randomly and constantly switching between songs and playlists, or alternatively not playing any music but just talking at me with its annoying computer voice. I can only attribute the behavior to sweat getting on the control box. Today I even tried covering the box with plastic wrap and tape, but to no avail. I was so frustrated with the ipod’s crazy behavior on mile 6 that I actually ripped the headphones out of my ears and threw them in the ditch. Not kidding. Looking for some alternative to control it, because I do really like it’s size for running, and the new playlist feature is great…but not when it’s acting crazy. I’m so irritated that Apple overlooked this crucial aspect of this product.

294 of 310 people found the following review helpful.
Worst Apple product ever
By J. Stafford
I bought the new iPod Shuffle as a replacement for my 2nd Gen Shuffle (which I loved) which died. I already have a iPhone which I use on a daily basis. The Shuffle is just for use in the gym and when out running.

I have just returned the iPod Shuffle as I have had nothing but problems with it. The first one I bought died completely within a couple of days and was duly replaced. The replacement I was given caused me nothing but headaches and so is now on its way back to Apple. I won’t be getting another.

Each time I used it, it either stopped working, wouldn’t change tracks or kept on repeating the message “playlist 1, playlist 1…” which was so annoying that I had to stop using it and am now looking for an alternative product.
The reason it does this (so I am told) is because the controls on the headphones are not moisture-proof! Mine died on me during slow jog in which I was hardly sweating at all! So unless you are one of those people who never sweats, this product is completely useless.

I know that Apple are working with 3rd party headphone manufacturers to produce alternative headphones, but why should you have to pay more just to get headphones which actually do what they are supposed to do?

Long gone are the days of Walkmans, and music cassettes, even CD’s and CD music players are getting dinosaurs of the music game. Mp3 music files have become the new style of how music is stored. Mp3 music files have an vantage over former styles such as being competent to back up the music to a computer, sharing ability, as well as only getting the songs you like. This form of music file does away with damaged, broken, and lost cassettes and CD as well as spending a ton of cash on a CD when there may be only one song you like. Mp3 files are played on a computer, or on a particular portable music player called an Mp3 player. Even children now want the latest gadget, so what are the best players for kids?

One of the best Mp3 players for kids is the notorious Apple brand iPod. There are galore dissimilar styles and price points for the iPod, and for children it’s probably best to choose the lower price end models as they are more durable. It is suggested to stick with either the iPod shuffle or iPod Nano. The iPod Nano 5th generation scored a 94 out of 100 on wize.com’s score sheet for best Mp3 players for children. The iPod Nano 5th generation comes in a potpourri of colors and comes at a price of around one hundred dollars, and has a screen so that the child may see what song they are selecting, and has a file capacity of when it comes to 8 gigabytes. The iPod shuffle is Apple’s very basic very simple iPod and is better for the younger child due to it is basic design. The iPod shuffle is comparatively pricey around sixty dollars, and it comes in a assortment of colors as well. This iPod has when it comes to 1 gigabyte of memory of storage or 250 songs, nevertheless it doesn’t come with a screen different from it’s Nano counterpart. The Sandisk brand Sansa 4 gigabyte clip Mp3 player is another great choice.
13 of 13 people found the following review helpful.
I recommend this to all the other parents!
By Rich Ball
I recommend the Sweetpea 3 to every parent I run across. Here’s why:

1) Most important for me – hidden volume control! My darling daughter can’t adjust the volume.
2) The battery lasts a REALLY long time.
3) It’s really easy to load songs.
4) It keeps 3 playlists, so when one finally drives me nuts I can change it.
5) Durable. We’ve had our first for over 2 years, and the second we bought for the car for about a year ago – both used for hours daily.
6) Timer – so when she walks away from it, it’ll turn itself off.
7) Reasonably good sound.

My only call-out is the way the battery connects. When the Sweetpea is hard hard on the side, the weight of the battery bends the connector, breaking the circuit and making it not work. This is easily fixed by just bending the V back in shape, and is the only flaw I’ve found in the Sweetpea 3 (my daughter would contend that not being available in pink is also a serious flaw).

I bought our first for my daughter’s 2nd birthday, and it’s still going like a champ after daily use 2 1/2 years later – and it’s still her second favorite thing in the world after her blankie. And like I said I recommend this music player all the time, and everyone I know who has one loves it.

EDIT: The newest version of the Sweetpea has the more typical coil spring instead of the V-shaped ones we have in ours. So the only issue has been fixed. Awesome job, Sweetpea!

Amos
Ordered a blue one for my 2 year old grandson and a lavender one for my 4 year old granddaughter. They were a big hit with the kids and their parents. The parental volume controls and the auto shut-off were big hits with Mom and Dad. Since early October, the batteries have only been replaced once. My son has transferred some favorite songs from CD’s to the MP3 players and they also love the songs and stories that came on them. The 2 year old has dropped his many times, even on the driveway, and it has not been harmed. Highly recommend this product for toddlers.

Getting an ipod or a mp3 player in your dream is just the initial step. To get the splendid sound quality, you may need to discover the tricks of drawing the best power of your player to let it do it is best for you. It is easy to grasp that the performance of a player is driven by two distinct elements – hardware and software. One may improve both the distinct features to get the optimal sound quality.

From hardware aspect, you must use better earpiece. Why? Do not ignore this tiny gizmo. A good set of earpieces play very primary role in sound quality, not to mention the price of them is equivalent to the player itself. It is a good way to heighten your player performance. Do not always use the amplifier that are embedded into the player. Too oftentimes use of amplifier will not only drain power quickly but likewise add lots of noise in the back ground of the music. Compared to the amplifier, a set of earpieces offer you higher quality music. In most cases, there is a set of earpiece coming within the box, but they are lame and cheap. Get branded earpieces and find the music quality principally improved!

From software aspect, I commend you using the AAC music. Most player like ipod, creative, cowon and iriver have a huge selections of music formats including mp3, WAV, WMA, AAC and etc. Most persons think there are little divergences amidst them. But they do matter differently very much in sound quality and file size. MP3, the Old file format that in general works badly at bit rates beneath 128kbps but may sound good at 160-196kbps, peculiarly with Lame encoding. WMA, Microsoft format with Standard, outperforms MP3 only at low bit rates and sounds worse than AAC at the same bit rates. AAC, (Advanced Audio Coding) Multichannel alternate for MP3 that works well at bit rates of 96kbps and below, and formulates littler files. At 128kbps, the quality may closely match CD quality and at 160kbps or higher, it ought to be equivalent to CD for most people. Personally, I commend using AAC as the necessary music storage format. Firstly, AAC has the smallest file size, much littler then mp3. Secondly, AAC is the format that has splendid sound quality which is very close to CD quality. However, most music downloaded from major web sites are encoded in mp3 which need to be converted to AAC. Such formats convert tool may be effortlessly found by searching the web.

I purchased this to replace another Sony receiver (same model variety) from 2006 that got stolen. The USB port works well with ipods, USB memory sticks, and other MP3 player deceives. Like most car receivers, it’s easy to install by following the directions packaged with the box.

It sounds great and has a lot of nice options. I bought it to interface with my iPod and I couldn’t be happier with the way it does. I do always keep it in iPod control mode because it’s always going to be easier to find a song on the iPod versus any CD player. However, I just can’t understand what Sony was thinking on a few aspects of this thing.

First of all, as others have said, the display is ridiculously dim. You can barely read the thing during the day even with the contrast turned all the way up. My friend just had a $60 CD player installed and the display can easily be read at all times so there is no excuse for this $100+ unit to have an unreadable display. I knew about this problem before I bought it and even though it’s annoying, I would still buy it again because I do like the unit. Now what really ticks me off is how easily my screen got scratched. I go on my first GPS necessary trip with this thing (only 2 hours of driving) and arrive home to find a series of scratches on the screen. What are they from? The power cord on my GPS. Yes, that nice smooth power cord scratched my screen to hell right where the time is displayed making it even harder to read in daylight hours. Couldn’t believe it. Perhaps I could have been more careful, but c’mon, it should be able to take that. God forbid I ever actually wanted to take my faceplate off and slipped it in my pocket or something. I’d hate to see what would happen then.

Whether you are gearing up to go to the beach this summer, looking for a way to make swimming laps more interesting, or perhaps desire a lot of music to go along with your surf sessions, you may want to invest in a waterproof mp3 player. These personal electronic gimmicks are in general regarding the same as normal MP3 players, except they have waterproof MP3 player cases. This, plus a set of headphones, is all you need if you just want to protect your MP3 player from a potential splash when you’re sun tanning next to the pool.

However, you will want something more specialized if you want a waterproof MP3 player for swimming. In this case, you will want headphones that will stay in when swimming and also want to make sure that the sound quality will be of an worthy of acceptance or satisfactory level. Here, frequent waterproof headphones may not do the trick. Alas, most of the waterproof MP3 players on the market are not built to withstand the pressures of going deeper in water, so scuba divers are out of luck here. There are a heap of more specialized productions that will grant you to dive and listen to music, though. There are even guided tours that play into your ear on dives!

Perhaps the best model of MP3 waterproof player for swimmers is the Finis swimp3 v2 waterproof MP3 player. This MP3 player uses technical inventions to use not sound, but direct vibrations versus the bones of your skull to transmit music- a direct transfer. This minimizes the noise of splashing water, as when one is swimming, to yield a much clearer sound. These sit on, rather than in, your ears. Thus, there is zero probability of having them fall out of your ears while swimming, which is a mutual problem with systems that use earphones. The sound when out of the water is not that great, but it just might be the best one for in the water, exceptionally when you are engaged in a physical activity.

Diver Waterproof Mp3 Player 4 Gb

This Diver MP3 player is a High Quality, Brand New and wholly waterproof MP3 player (along with waterproof earphones). It’s perfective for wearing while swimming or doing any other water activity. Both the MP3 player or earphones may stay submerged beneath water for more than 24 hours without preserving damage. The MP3 player may be without apparent effort attached onto headband or swimming goggles while you swim! The player comes with waterproof earphones that are short and unobtrusive and hooks around the ears for better stability. These earphones come with an extension wire to extend the earphone wire length for non-water use.

It’s by no means a replacement for other music players, but I’d much rather bring this in the water than anything else. The buttons are big so it’s pretty easy to manage while it sits on the back of my head. It’s pretty flat so it doesn’t move around much. It’s very lightweight so I never notice it.

The waterproof ear buds aren’t the greatest, though I’ve never tried any others so I’m not sure what to compare them to. When I swim they pretty easily fall out so I bought a swim cap for for a few bucks and it helps. I’ve had no problem with water getting into the ear buds and damaging them. It’s just a pain when water sits between the buds and my ear muting the sound. I typically just turn the sound up louder to try and help. There are plenty of different ear bud sizes which I haven’t tried so I may be just using the wrong size.

The dry buds work great. There’s a nice little arm band which works well when I’m out for a run or in the gym. I’ve never heard the devise skip. It simply works.

One miner problem I’ve encountered is the device seems to skip the first half second of each song whether in continuous play or shuffle. It’s not that big of a deal but don’t plan on listening to Dark Side of the Moon or something else which really needs gapless playback. Also, the devise does not remember its own shuffle order so if it’s in shuffle, you complete a song and want to listen to it again, hitting the back button will take you back to an entirely different song. Once again, not that big of a deal, but worth noting.

I work out typically four times a week for an hour a day, once or twice in water and this gets the job done. I charge it at the end of the week and maybe change up the music. Simple drag and drop. No special software which I like.

Has the smaller earphone jack so can only use their earbuds. “Waterproof” earbuds really sound cheap. I’ve Seen other product reviews on other brands and that seems to be the problem with all other brands also. Problem is the instructions state do not allow water in the earbuds or it will damage them!! They are supposed to be waterproof!! Still make paddle boarding or swimming way more enjoyable!!!
They will fall out when swimming. I am not a fast swimmer and they fell out many times. Not sure if the ribbed buds from others are any better. Still better than nothing. The “dry” earbuds that come with have GREAT sound though.
Simple to load music, just drag and drop.
Battery life about 3-4 hours.
Bud wire screws in so it will not fall out. That’s good.
You can not remove the ear hangers from the buds like some other brands.
Simple to operate except the mode indicator light is too dim outdoors so you are guessing until you hear songs whether it is in shuffle or order mode.
I took a gamble on this one since there were no reviews and I would say just OK.

I absolutely love it. I swim 2-3 miles a week in the Y pool and after I found the right ear bud size, I can swim for over an hour and not have to adjust it. I found that it is best to use your swim goggle straps to help hold the plastic over the ear pieces in place. If you do get water in the ear, you can simply pull out the ear bud, give it a shake and your good to go. Great product for the price. Transferring music is really simple to. Plug in in to your computer and just cut and paste MP3 files.
