Television technology marched forward acutely in 2004 as high-definition television (HDTV) and respective services for time-shifting programs made a push toward the mainstream. “Consumers will have more flexibleness over what they watch and when they watch it,” said Phillip Swann, president of TVPredictions.com. Swann pegged growing usage of HDTV, digital video recorders (DVRs) such as TiVo, and on-demand video service as the year’s most important TV trends.

Although HDTV remained a prohibitively pricey proposition for most consumers, prices for the necessary instrumentation started out to decline significantly in 2004, and the number of high-definition programs that were being offered grew. The telecasting of sports was a key factor in driving the growth, experts said. For example, Cox Cable in San Diego, Calif., saw it is “take rate” for high-definition services jump 40% after San Diego Padres baseball games started out to be offered in the new, more bright format.

The use of DVRs, long envisioned as the wave of TV’s future, in the long run begun to climb in 2004, for the most part because cable-TV operators begun to offer them packaged inside their cable boxes. This arrangement was less complicated than TiVo’s, which distinctively required users to buy and install a distinguished audio-video appliance. Independent industry analysts prevised that the number of DVR-equipped homes would explode from 7 million at the end of 2004 to galore 30 million, or close to one-third of American households, within four years. Also frequent were new video-on-demand cable-TV services, which permitted a user to call up an episode of HBO’s The Sopranos, for example, from an on-screen menu and watch it without delay rather than wait for the show to appear on the regular HBO schedule. The two technologies together were forcing networks and promotion agencies to rethink the traditionalisti 30-second TV advertisement.

On the basis of it is tracking of DVR usage by it is 800,000 customers, TiVo revealed that the most-watched Olympic moment was gymnast Paul Hamm’s high-bar performance. The most-replayed Super Bowl moment was Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction.” In October Nielsen Media Research, the company that provided the Nielsen ratings, begun culling selective information on DVR use from 5,000-10,000 TiVo households that had accorded to participate. TiVo faced off versus operators that provided cable and satellite services with DVR functions. Hollywood studios and the U.S. National Football League blocked TiVo from permitting it is subscribers to transfer recorded shows to other devices, but TiVo and Netflix consorted to construct a service for clients to rent videos by downloading them through TiVo.

Microsoft Corp. unveiled MSN TV2, made by Thomson for RCA, which offered a subscription package that included MSN, NBC, Discovery Channel, and Fox Sports. At the same time, Microsoft introduced the new Windows XP Media Center software, which made it possible for a PC to function as a photo album, jukebox, DVD player, TV receiver, and DVR.

In August Toshiba introduced Qosmio, the initial laptop integrated with audio and video features, DVD drive, TV tuner with a no-waiting TV mode, heightened speakers, and near-TV-quality display. The Samsung MM-A700 cellphone employed MobiTV engineering science to function as a TV. It could show news updates, sports clips, weather forecasts, music videos, and cartoons from 14 cable stations of streaming video provided by the Sprint network. Samsung also launched HDTV with a picture-enhancing feature called DNIe (digital natural effigy engine). Ahead of the holidays personal computer giant Dell freed it is original plasma-screen TV. It had freed it is introductory LCD (liquid-crystal display) TV in December 2003. Sharp, Japan’s top maker of LCD panels, declared it is latest product, a 114-cm (45-in) LCD TV, to keep up with demands for 102-cm (40-in) or more prominent flat TVs. Earlier, it had introduced the world’s introductory wireless flat-panel TV, the Aquos LC-15L1U-S, with a 38-cm (15-in) display screen and built-in battery.

Patients in 32 British hospitals complained in regards to TV sets in their rooms having no “off” switch. Even when they refused to subscribe, the TVs blared ads for the service and messages from hospital authorities. Television service, installed by private firm Patientline, cost persons who requires medical care $5.75 per day.

Solomon
The handlebar mount and cadence and speed sensors went on quickly and worked flawlessly. However, when I first received the package in the mail, I was concerned I had ordered the wrong item. I have a Forerunner 305 wrist-mounted GPS, and all of the packaging for this product references the Edge GPS sensor, so I didn’t know whether or not this would even work with the Forerunner. There are very slight differences in navigating the menus to set up the cadence sensor between the Forerunner and the Edge, but the cadence sensor does indeed work very well with the Forerunner, so Forerunner owners order without fear!

This makes id difficult and may require some minor modifications on some bicycles (I needed to add a spacer between the crank arm and the magnet). Too much tilt towards the crank, risks having the arm of the sensor being caught in the spokes after a large bump on the trails or raod. I have known of other people being able to purchase a larger magnet to the inside of the pedal screw which allows the sensor to be farther appart. Other than that, it works great with the Edge.

Nokia N78 bears numerous resemblance to the N82, but as it is likewise a portion of the N-series, we can not suppose a finish new model. Wi-Fi, GPS and HSDPA (3.5G) are a good deal of features that N78 shares with N82. But, apart from these correspondings there are some contrasting distinguishable features. N78 boasts a FM transmitter that allows transmitting music to the nearby FM radio. So, the users of N78 may have great car journeys with the mini radio station at their hands. Also, the stereo speakers add a good deal of extra volume to the handset and the 3.5mm headphone jack allows them to stick their frequent headphones directly into it. On the back of N78 there is an splendid 3.2 megapixel camera which is in fact the much preferent solution these days. Carl Zeiss optics with the camera provides crystal clear pictures and hence there is no need to buy the pricey N96 range for it is 5-megapixels camera. The four-way navigation key operate as a touch sensible scroll wheel, much identical to an iPod’s click wheel that lets you hunt music tracks and contacts quickly.

There ought to be a great deal of divergence amid N78 and N96 detached from the dual-sliding form factor. If the storage space of N78 is doubled, the media junkies would get more space to store their songs and videos. But, now they have to yearn for more. As far as call quality is concerned, N78 lives up to the expectation of a branded Nokia phone. Ring tones are rather piercing because of the dual speakers. N78 is a mixed bag of all the gains of Nokia’s N-series devices. However, the keypad’s ergonomics could be bettered and the design may get acceptance amidst it is users. There are not much drawbacks to the N78 as the user’s person taste and preference may make each handset distinguishable and personal.

The handset weighs when it comes to 101.9 grams and measures 113x49x15.1mm. It is various millimeters thinner than Nokia N82 and also much lighter than the N73 model. The overall volume is also high at 89.1 cc and it feels somewhat littler in the hand. The face of the device is divided amidst the keys and the 2.4 inch QVGA screen. The design of candybar handsets always makes a perfective remainder of these two necessary elements. Even while using the bottom row number keys, the users may effortlessly hold it and the sleek body makes the storage easier.

The micro USB socket is the above par factor of almost each Nokia handset and N78 also comes with this special feature. The socket may be used to make data transfers while the headphones may be capped in the 3.5 mm audio jack placed at the top edge besides the power button. The left side of the device has the 2mm charger slot. It is sure that when Nokia’s N78 arrives in May, it would become general in a shorter time due to it is magnificent functionalities and distinctive features. Also, it is expected that this model would pose a stiff contest to other handsets with similar features.

Speaker boxes are applied to house various element subwoofers and other speakers in an enclosure. Although most subwoofers are sold separately, you might want to put them into one box or enclosure accordingly the use of a speaker box. Speaker boxes are not hard to build but are very challenging for if done in the right way they may support heighten the output of stereo source. For those who are not so good with craftwork may surely order the sub woofers already pre-enclosed.

What is necessitated in order to build a speaker box?

It all depends on your budget and intent of the speaker boxes. You have to determine the size and the materials used. The best material that you may use is a ¾ inch medium density filter board. If you have the cash to spare, you may opt for more exotic materials but most people use fiberboard.

Aside from the fiberboard, you will also need: a jigsaw (a bladed cutting power tool), a power drill, a spiral but, a ¾-inch bit, a router, sand paper, spray glue, solder gun and ammo, and a great deal of carpet if you want to cover the speaker box.

Most subwoofers on the market come with a set of optional instructions that let you design an enclosure for it. No need to figure out the dimensions when a set of measurements have already been included in the package. In this case it means that you won’t have to go through trial and error designing an enclosure since it has the mutual specs for most speaker boxes.

One crucial thing you have to realize is that if the measurements are given on an interior measurement, you might have to adjust the measurements by as much as ¾-inch.

It is also idealisti to trace your desired design and size measurements on the filter board rather than doing any freehand cutting. Avoid using markers for they may be unsightly if the speaker boxes are not covered with carpet.

For evident reasons, you have to use your jigsaw to cut the design and not a knife or other cutting tool. The jigsaw lets you curt clean and neat. Once the pieces have been cut out, it is a good idea to make a trace of where the speakers would go into. In order for you to do this you would have to use a router. Once you have applied the router to cut the holes, you would have to use sand paper to smoothen the holes made.

You will have to also look into creating holes so that the necessary cables may pass through. If the template or instructions do not have any notes for holes, it is best to manufacture 2 inch holes on either side of the speaker box. Always sand them through so that there are no snags when done.

After the holes have been cut, you may now assemble the boards together. Using screws, nuts and washers, you have to make sure that they fit tight and don’t rattle. Always leave the front of the box last so that any last minute works may be dealt with.

The next part is the easiest for all you have to do is out the subwoofers in, close the front panel, and plug the power and connectors in.

The real workload is in the construction of the speaker box and that being said, you have to make sure that the work done is up to precise and exact.

Human Resource Information Systems

The intent of this paper is to tell apart other companies who have faced similar humane resources issues in regards to info technology. Through benchmarking dissimilar companies we may learn how other companies have handled sure humane resources issues affiliated to data technology, data systems, new technology, and selective information security. An overall analysis has been finished using exploration on IBM Europe, Ameriprise Financial, Terasen Pipelines, Shaw’s Supermarkets, CS Stars LLC, IBM, WORKSource Inc., and Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. This paper also includes eight synopses of companies facing similar issue to those in the reading.

New Technology

With the altering world and uninterrupted new engineering science that is available, managers need to be conscious of the technology that will increase effectiveness in their company. Human resource data schemes (HRIS) have progressively transformed since it was firstborn introduced at General Electric in the 1950s. HRIS has gone from a basic procedure to convert manual selective information keeping systems into computerized systems, to the HRIS systems that are used today. Human resource pros begun to see the possibleness of new apps for the computer. The idea was to comprise a heap of of the dissimilar humane resource functions. The result was the third generation of the computerized HRIS, a feature-rich, broad-based, self-contained HRIS. The third generation took systems far beyond being mere selective information repositories and developed tools with which humane resource masters could do much more (Byars, 2004).

Many companies have seen a need to transform the way Human Resource operations are performed in order to keep up with new technology and increasing numbers of employees. Terasen Pipelines moved it is headquarters from Vancouver to Calgary to be closer to the oil and realized a major growth in employees. In the past recording keeping was done on paper and with spreadsheets. Mangers at Terasen realized that there was a need to alter to a more computerized scheme and looked into dissimilar HRIS vendors. By making the move to a HRIS system, Terasen is competent to keep more precise records as well as better prepare for future growth. Another company that saw the gains of keeping up with new technology is WORKSource Inc. To meet the challenge of handling 100 new employees, WORKSource Inc. acquired Web-based engineering science programs from GHG Corp. like electronic pay stub, electronic timesheet software, time-off system, and humane resource selective information system (“Tips,” 2006). By adjusting these new programs, WORKSource was capable to reduce waste and cost.

The Internet is an growingly usual way to recruit applicants, exploration technologies and carry out other necessary functions in business. Delivering humane resource services online (eHR) supports more effective collection, storage, distribution, and interchange of info (Friesen, 2003). An intranet is a type of network applied by companies to percentage selective information to persons within the organization. An intranet connects persons to people and persons to selective information and psychological result of perception learning and reasoning within the organization; it serves as an “information hub” for the entire organization. Most organizations set up intranets principally for employees, but they may extend to business collaborators and even clients with suitable security clearance (Byars & Rue, 2004).

Applications of HRIS

The efficacy of HRIS, the schemes are capable to formulate more effective and more quickly outcomes than may be done on paper. Some of the numerous apps of HRIS are: Clerical applications, applicant search expenditures, danger management, training management, training experiences, financial planning, turnover analysis, succession planning, flexible-benefits administration, compliance with government regulations, attendance reporting and analysis, humane resource planning, accident reporting and preventative action and strategic planning. With the numerous dissimilar apps of HRIS, it is difficult to perceive how the programs gain companies without looking at companies that have already benefited from such programs.

One such company is IBM. IBM has a paperless online enrollment plan for all of it is employees. Not only has the online enrollment saved the company 1.2 million per year on printing and mailing costs, the workers receive pleasure from working with the online plan. “Since we started out supplying online enrollment, we’ve learned that workers want web access,” Donnelly [Senior Communications Specialist] says, so they may log on at home rather than through the company intranet. So the company has been working to put in place a web-based enrollment scheme that laborers and retirees may access from anyplace (Huering, 2003). By utilizing the flexible-benefits application HRIS has to offer, IBM was capable to cut costs and give workers the freedom to discover their gains on their own time and pace.

Another company that has taken vantage of HRIS apps is Shaw’s Supermarkets. In order for Shaw’s to better manage it is workforce, the company decisive it was time to centralize the HR operations. After looking at dissimilar options, Shaw’s decisive to apply an Employee Self Service (ESS) system. The use of self-service apps gives rise to a positive circumstance for HR. ESS gives HR more time to focus on strategic issues, such as workforce management, succession planning, and compensation management, while at the same time bettering service to workers and managers, and ensuring that their info is accurate. With this solution, workers have online access to forms, training material, gains data and other payroll affiliated data (Koven, 2002). By giving laborers access to their personal info and the capacity to update or change their info as needed, HR was given more time to focus on other issues. Understanding the dissimilar apps HRIS has to offer will give companies the probability to increase employee efficacy and reduce costs.

Measuring the Effectiveness of HRIS

The evaluation will have to determine whether or not the HRIS has performed up to it is expected values and if the HRIS is being employed to it is full vantage (Byars & Rue, 2004). One of the most substantial challenges faced by public personnel executives today is measuring the performance of their humane resources selective information scheme (HRIS) In order to warrant the value-added contribution of the HRIS to achieving the organization’s mission (Hagood & Friedman, 2002). Implementing an HRIS program may seem a necessary stem for a company, but unless it will be an effective tool for HR operations, it will not support increase efficacy and may hinder it instead.

One company that enforced a HRIS scheme is Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. (TAMS). TAMS put all employee gains selective information online and produced an open enrollment option when TAMS changed healthcare providers. Almost without delay upon rolling out the UltiPro portal [new HRIS technology] to employees, TAMS begun seeing improvements, with an approximated 70% increase in open enrollment efficacy (Wojcik, 2004). By determining the efficacy of the new program, TAMS was competent to realize the gains of the new HRIS system.

Security of HRIS

The privacy of employee info has become a major issue in recent years. With identity theft getting a mutual problem, workers are getting more sensible regarding who sees their personal information, and the security it is held in. By making sure employee selective information that is held in the HRIS is applicable to the company and making sure there is fixed access (password protection) to such information, companies may make it is laborers more secure with the safety of their information. Whether electronic or paper, employee files is worthy of to be treated with great care. Establishing security and end-user privileges calls for a remainder of incorporating, HR policy, scheme noesis and day-to-day operations (O’Connell, 1994).

One company that faced a major security issue was CS Stars, LLC. CS Stars lost track of one of it is computers that contained personal data that included names, addresses and social security numbers of workers compensation benefits. The more prominent problem was that CS Stars failed to notify the affected buyers and workers with regards to the missing computer. Though the computer was retrieved and no selective information seemed to have been harmed, some workers lost their sense of security with the company. New York’s Information Security Breach and Notification Law, effective in December 2005, requires businesses that maintain computerized selective information which includes private info to notify the owner of the info of any breach of the security of the scheme without delay following discovery, if the private selective information was, or is somewhat believed to have been, acquired by a person without valid authorization (Cadrain, 2007).

Another company that experienced a breach in security is Ameriprise Financial. In late 2005, a computer that contained personal data on clients and laborers was stolen. Because some of the laborers at Ameriprise take their computers amid work and home, the company determined there was a need to put more security into those computers. Ameriprise made sure all laborers had the new security suite installed on their computers. By responding quickly to the need for more security, Ameriprise made sure all selective information is being held secure. Making sure laborers selective information is kept as secure as possible there will be more trust in the company and the HR workers working with that information.

Conclusion

IBM, Terasen Pipeline, CS Stars LCC, and Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. are good examples of companies facing issues similar to humane resources info technology and humane resources info systems. All of these companies recognise the importance of new technology, humane resources selective information systems, and data security. The remainder of this paper provides synopses of more companies facing humane resources issues, how the company responded to the issues, and the outcomes of the company’s responses.

Companies Benchmarked

IBM Europe

The Situation:

IBM is a international institution providing research, software, hardware, IT consulting, business and management consulting, ring and financing. It employs around 340,000 people, speaking 165 languages all over 75 countries, and serving clients in 174 countries. In January 2007, IBM conventional a discerned “new media” function within it is corporate communication department. IBM main goal is to educate, support, and promote programs that implement social media. IBM Europe decisive to exaggerate internal communicating by blogging guidelines. The acknowledgement was that blogging was already happening amongst IBMers, just in an unregulated way. In a similar way, institutionalizing a function to deal distinctively with new media is not a corporate move, or establishing from scratch. It’s a response to the issues already emergent in the company. Now that those technologies are here, people are using them, they’re growing and there here to stay-we’re just going to put a good deal of structure around them so that we may try to optimize their use.” The users determine what technologies they want to use and how they want to use them. That main idea is that IBM understands that they will have to do not forget to respect the fact that social media are social. IBM had the need to connect it is 340,000 global workers more effectively.

The Response:

IBM’s aim around social media has now been officially formalized. From January 22 2007, the company conventional a distinguished “new media” function within it is corporate communication department. “Its remit: To act as expert advisors inside and outside IBM on issues relating to blogs, wikis, RSS and other social media applications. The main idea is to educate, support and advertize programs that utilise these tools. IBM has a history of being a t the forefront of engineering science based corporate communication. From the multimedia brainstorming “WorldJam” that made news headlines back in 2001 in which 50,000 laborers global joined a real time, online idea-sharing session when it comes to the company’s direction. IMB has always prepared itself to use breakthrough technologies to establish a two-way dialog with it is employees. The need for social media was necessary and could no longer wait.

The Outcome:

In the last few years IBM has been recognized as being the vanguard of social-media use: IBM was on of the initial Fortune 500 companies to get behind collaborative wikis, published internal blogging guidelines as far back as 2003, and is now moving fast beyond RSS and podcasts into videocasting and “virtual world” technologies like Second Life. The intranet search facility extends to all areas of the site, including new media aspects. When an employee logs onto their portal an executes a key word search, the results they get back not only come from the main intranet pages, but include results from IBM forums, wikis, blogs and podcast/videocasts tags. IMB has an understanding that laborers are no longer staying in a company their entire lives. It’s just not like that any more. In Belgium for example over 50 percent of 2,300 workers have been there less than five years. The company has come to the conclusion that with an more and more young and mobile workforce, the likelihood is that an employee population full of a younger generation, for whom these tools are part and parcel of life, is not that far away. In years to come IBM will have to deal with employee base for which blogging is just the natural way to interact over a web platform. IBM has produced centralized platforms for most tools that fall under it is remit, which includes wikis. For Philippe Borremans, new media lead Europe for IBM, has the potential business apps of a wiki cover two wide benefits: Collaborating and psychological result of perception learning and reasoning sharing. IBM has scored a great deal of noteworthy successes on both fronts in the near 5000 wiki pages now up and running in the organization. The company has been a big pick-up in interest in podcasting over the last 18 months writing may seem such a technical skill, whereas people feel they may talk more freely than they may write. One of the most systematically usual IBM podcasts, with over 20,000 downloads a week.

Ameriprise Financial

The Situation:

The Department of Justice survey estimates that 3.6 million U.S. households were victims of identity theft in 2004. Trafficking in personal date goes beyond U.S. borders: the New York Times reports that stolen financial info is often times circulated amongst players of online retail boards, and the buyers are often times located in Russia, Ukraine, and the Middle East. One reason clients are concerned when it comes to info security is the widespread advertizing generated by breaches at financial services firm. In late December 2205, an Ameriprise Financial employee’s laptop that contained unencrypted selective information on approximately 230,000 clients and consultants was stolen from a car. Other financial services firm, including Citigroup and Bank of America, likewise know large-scale client data losses in 2005. President of NCS, Rita Dew, a compliance consulting firm in Delray Beach, Florida, says that the Securities and Exchange Commission requires investment consultants to have policies and procedures that address the administrative, technical, and physical safeguards related to client records and information.

The Response:

Ameriprise Financial had to fight back and had to utilize “layers of protection.” It is indispensable for workers who their important business computer, and workers regularly transport the computer amid home, office, and meeting sites. The vulnerability of this arrangement and the need for a safety software program is much needed.

The Outcome:

Employees who are transporting lab tops will have to install the Steganos Security Suite on their computer. This software allows workers to give rise to an encrypted virtual drive on the laptop that serves as info storage safe. Employees stores all client related selective information and tax preparation software database on the encrypted drive, which workers has set up with one gigabyte of storage space. The best thing is that when an employee turns off the computer the data is stored “safe”, the software mechanically encrypts the virtual drive’s data. The software also generates encrypted backup files, which laborers store on CDs in a fireproof safe. This will have to keep the info secure if any employee’s laptop is stolen or if the drive is got rid of from the laptop. Other financial advisors are relying on encryption both in and out of the office. Other programs that are being employed to protect client’s data are RAID Level 1 scheme to store info on the drives that are encrypted with WinMagic’s SecureDocs software. Encryption ensures that anybody who steals the computer will be utterly unable to read the data, even by connecting it to another computer as a “slave drive. This has given a heap of financial consultants the greatest peace of mind.

Terasen Pipelines

The Situation:

Terasen Pipelines is a subsidiary of Terasen Inc. located in Vancouver, Canada and is located in assorted provinces and U.S. states. In 2001 the company changed it is headquarters to Calgary to be closer to the oil. With the huge move, the company went through a growth spurt. With the company in a heap of dissimilar emplacements and the growing numbers of employees, the HR division saw a need to find a new scheme to keep more exact records.

The Response:

In the past Terasen had held records on paper and with spreadsheets and with the growth of the company, this system does not work as well as in the past. In order to remunerate for future growth, Terasen started out to look into HRIS companies to help with the HR operations. After researching dissimilar companies, Hewitt’s application service provider model with eCyborg was found to be the right fit.

The Outcome:

Although there was difficultness adjusting to a new way of recordkeeping, Terasen was competent to find a scheme that will aid aid the current and future growth of the company. Fortunately, numerous of the HR staff had experience working with an HRIS and were competent to support their colleagues imagine new processes, as aided by a system. One theme often voiced allround this procedure was: “You guys don’t know how hard we’re working when we may make it so much requiring little effort with a system that could do a lot of this for us. You don’t always have to run to the cabinet for the employee file just to get basic information. It may all be at your fingertips.” (Vu, 2005). In order to aid Terasen ease the HR burden of implementing a new HR system, the management of Terasen was convinced to look for a marketer to support employ and maintain a HRIS system. This scheme has helped Terasen better prepare for current and future growth.

Shaw’s Supermarkets

The Situation:

Shaw’s Supermarkets is the second biggest supermarket chain in New England. With a workforce of 30,000 located at 180 stores all around six states, Shaw’s HR staff is responsible for managing employees’ personal data. Their employee mix includes approximately 70 percent part-time employees, consisting of students, senior citizens, second-job part-timers, and career part-timers. One third of the workforce is made up of union associates, and Shaw’s staff oversees the company’s involvement with three unions and six discerned contracts (Koven, 2002). In order to help manage the workforce, the HR staff became fascinated in centralizing it is HR operations.

The Response:

In order to centralize HR operations Shaw’s decisive to utilize an ESS (employee self-service) solution. The use of self-service apps produces a positive circumstance for HR. ESS gives HR more time to focus on strategic issues, such as workforce management, succession planning, and compensation management, while at the same time bettering service to workers and managers, and ensuring that their data is accurate. With this solution, laborers have online access to forms, training material, gains selective information and other payroll related information.

The Outcome:

Shaw’s has had positive feedback since implementing the ESS solution. “The reaction from our workers has been exceedingly positive,” Penney, VP of Compensation and Benefits, says. “We even had a substantial increase in our medical coverage costs, and it was closely a non-issue because the online enrollment featured the plan choices, the employee cost, and the company subsidy. An employee self-service application makes it very easy for them to perceive their contributions and coverage options. I received assorted e-mails from laborers saying this was a outstanding modify and how easy ESS was, which the case is not ofttimes when laborers are selecting their gain options.” (Koven, 2002). By giving the workers more access to their selective information they are competent to see the gain selections available to them. Employees are also capable to update their data online, which helps reduce the paperwork of the past. Shaw’s has likewise seen betterment in productivity because laborers are updating info at home, not for the duration of work hours.

CS Stars, LLC

The Situation:

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has declared that New York State has reached it is firstborn settlement with a company charged with failing to notify buyers and others that their personal info had gone missing. Cuomo’s office, which enforces the state’s 2005 Information Security Breach and Notification Law, charged CS STARS LLC, a Chicago-based claims management company, with failing to give detect that it had lost track of a computer containing info on 540,000 New Yorkers’ workers’ comp claims.

The Response:

The proprietor of the lost data, which had been in the custody of CS STARS, was the New York Special Funds Conservation Committee, an establishment that helps in supplying workers’ comp gains beneath the state’s workers’ comp law. On May 9, 2006, a CS STARS employee noticed that a computer was missing that held personal information, including the names, addresses, and Social Security numbers of recipients of workers’ compensation benefits. But CS Stars waited until June 29, 2006, to notify Special Funds and the FBI of the security breach. Because the FBI declared that detect to buyers might impede it is investigation, CS STARS waited until July 8, 2006, to send notices to the 540,000 New Yorkers affected by the breach. On July 25, 2006, the FBI determined an employee, of a cleaning contractor, had stolen the computer, and the missing computer was located and recovered. In addition, the FBI found that the selective information on the missing computer had not been improperly accessed.

The Outcome:

New York’s Information Security Breach and Notification Law, effective in December 2005, requires businesses that maintain computerized data which includes private selective information to notify the proprietor of the info of any breach of the security of the scheme without delay following discovery, if the private data was, or is reasonably believed to have been, acquired by a person without valid authorization. The law affects not only businesses in their dealings with their customers, but employers in their role as custodians of employees’ personal data. (Cadrain)

Without admitting to any violation of law, CS STARS accorded to comply with the law and assure that proper notifications will be made in the event of any future breach. The company likewise consorted to utilize more spacious exercises relating to the security of private information. CS STARS will pay the Attorney General’s office $60,000 for costs related to this investigation. (Cadrain)

IBM

The Situation:

IBM’s paperless online enrollment system, introduced in 1999, has proved to be a winner for both the company’s 135,000 active U.S. workers and the company, according to Cathleen Donnelly, senior communications specialist at company headquarters in Armonk, N.Y. The company saves $1.2 million per year on printing and mailing costs alone, Donnelly says, and the employees’ may take vantage of a assortment of technologies to learn in regards to issues, exploration program selective information and access decision aid tools from their desktop computers. (Heuring, 2002)

The Response:

One of those tools, a personal medical cost estimator, enables workers to calculate potential out-of-pocket health care disbursements underneath each of the plan choices available to them, Donnelly says. Employees log in personally and are greeted by name and with important info in regards to their gains enrollment, such as the deadlines and when changes take effect. They mechanically get access to health plans that are available to them, and the calculator lets them compare approximated gain amounts for each plan.

“Employees may select the health care services they suppose to use in a peculiar year, estimate expected frequency of use, and calculate potential costs beneath each plan option,” Donnelly says. “The feedback that we’ve received from workers tells us that this tool has in truth helped them to make a comparison amongst plans based on how they consume medical services.” The calculator shows both IBM’s costs and the employee’s. (Heuring, 2002)

The Outcome:

“Since we started out providing online enrollment, we’ve learned that laborers want web access,” Donnelly says, so they may log on at home rather than through the company intranet. So the company has been working to put in place a web-based enrollment scheme that laborers and retirees may access from anywhere.

Employees may get summary info on the plans, drill down into very specific details and follow links to the health care suppliers for research. Donnelly says the system has received high marks for comfortableness because laborers may “get in and out quickly.”

WORKSource Inc.

The Situation:

To meet the challenge of handling 100 new employees, WORKSource Inc. acquired Web-based technology programs from GHG Corp. like electronic paystub, electronic timesheet software, time-off system, and humane resource data scheme (“Tips,” 2006). These tools enabled CEO Judith Hahn to handling payroll procedures expeditiously and effectively.

The Response:

WORKSource has eight workforce centers, with approximately 108 employees, located allround a six-county region. Previously, payroll, benefits, and humane resources for those laborers were processed and managed by a Professional Employer Organization. The company likewise has 52 administrative staff in it is headquarters office. When the contract with the PEO terminated on June 30, 2006, those 108 laborers were without delay moved to the payroll of WORKSource, which meant Hahn’s workload more than doubled effective July 2006 (“Tips,” 2006).

Hahn, in an consultation with PMR, said she relied on LEAN to support get a handle on what necessitated to change for her to manage the increased workload. Two years earlier, Hahn’s CEO had introduced her to LEAN, a Japanese management conception of eliminating wasteful steps and motion when completing processes. “I begun to read as much as possible regarding LEAN and joined an HR LEAN focus group” (“Tips,” 2006).

The Outcome:

Mastering the conceptions of LEAN led Hahn to develop and implement her own acronym of “REASON” to her department’s payroll and HR processes. Review the process: map payroll tasks from commence to finish. Eliminate waste: determine how to finish a payroll task most expeditiously without unnecessary steps. Analyze alternatives: exploration and evaluate the applicability of new technology. Sell inventions to management: document the return on investment of each innovation. Open the lines of communication: commune openly—and often—with all stakeholders, including workers and top management. Never concede negativity: make change simple and fun. Give workers a great deal of encouragement and time to learn (“Tips,” 2006). Judith Hahn was capable to implement the right humane resource functions using data systems.

Toshiba America Medical Systems Inc.

The Situation:

Lynda Morvik, conductor of gains and humane resources selective information schemes at Tustin, California-based Toshiba America Medical Systems Inc. (TAMS), thought it would make sense to add a gains communication element to it. By having all the gain info online, the TAMS employee handbook would likewise be a living document, enabling Morvik to make changes when necessary. Such was the case halfway through the project, when TAMS changed health care plans from Aetna Inc. to United Health Group Inc (Wojcik, 2004).

The Response:

TAMS, an independent group company of Toshiba Corporation and a international leading provider of diagnostic medical imaging schemes and comprehensive medical solutions, such as CT, X-ray, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, MRI, and info systems, had been using a payroll service bureau and an in-house solution for HR that didn’t include easy-to-use consolidated reporting or an employee portal. After assessing UltiPro alongside various enterprise resource vendors, TAMS chosen Ultimate Software’s supplying and went live in September 2002 after an on-time and on-budget implementation. Almost without delay upon rolling out the UltiPro portal to employees, TAMS started out seeing improvements, with an approximated 70% increase in open enrollment efficacy (Wojcik, 2004).

The Outcome:

In an venture to exaggerate the usage of the Web beyond the gains enrollment process, TAMS has posted a library of documents and forms on it is HR portal, including the gains handbook, which garnered a 2004 Apex Award for publication excellence. That same year, Business Insurance magazine likewise gave TAMS the Electronic Benefit Communication (EBC) award for outstanding accomplishment in communication employee gains programs over the Web. To proceed elevating it is use of Ultimate Software’s HRMS/payroll solution, TAMS modified the UltiPro portal to meet the imaging company’s distinctive needs (Wojcik, 2004). It was exclusively integrated with assorted proprietary apps developed to address compensation and performance management issues so that TAMS laborers have a central emplacement for comprehensive workforce and payroll selective information from a Web browser that they may access with a single sign-on (Wojcik, 2004).

No new engineering science formulates smoothly, and video conferencing had more than it is part of bumps along the way before getting the widely applied communications staple it is today. The history of video conferencing in it is earliest form goes back to the 1960′s, when AT&T introduced the Picturephone at the World’s Fair in New York. While viewed as a arousing and attention holding curiosity, it never became standard and was too highpriced to be practical for most buyers when it was offered for $160 a month in 1970. Commercial use of real video conferencing was basi realized with Ericsson’s presentment of the basi trans-Atlantic LME video telephone call. Soon other companies started out refining video conferencing technologies, including such advancements as network video protocol (NVP) in 1976 and packet video protocol (PVP) in 1981. None of these were put into mercantile use, however, and stayed in the laboratory or private company use. In 1976, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone traditionalisti video conferencing (VC) amongst Tokyo and Osaka for company use. IBM Japan followed suit in 1982 by establishing VC running at 48000bps to link up with already established internal IBM video conferencing links in the United States so that they could have on a weekly basis meetings. The 1980′s introduce mercantile video conferencing In 1982, Compression Labs introduces their VC system to the world for $250,000 with lines for $1,000 an hour. The scheme was big and employed enormous resources competent of tripping 15 amp circuit breakers. It was, however, the only working VC scheme available until PictureTel’s VC hit the market in 1986 with their substantially for less $80,000 system with $100 per hour lines. In the time in amid these two commercially offered systems, there were other video conferencing schemes produced that were never offered commercially. The history of video conferencing isn’t finish without mentioning these schemes that were either prototypes or systems devised quintessentially for in-house use by a assortment of corporations or organizations, including the military. Around 1984, Datapoint was using the Datapoint MINX scheme on their Texas campus, and had provided the scheme to the military. In the late 1980′s, Mitsubishi started out retail a still-picture phone that was fundamentally a flop in the market place. They dropped the line two years after introducing it. In 1991, the primary PC based video conferencing system was introduced by IBM – PicTel. It was a black and white scheme using what was at the time an fantastically inexpensive $30 per hour for the lines, while the system itself was $20,000. In June of the same year, DARTnet had with great success connected a transcontinental IP network of over a dozen exploration web sites in the United States and Great Britain using T1 trunks. Today, DARTnet has evolved into the CAIRN system, which connects dozens of institutions. CU-SeeMe revolutionizes video conferencing One of the most widely known and esteemed schemes in the history of video conferencing was the CU-SeeMe devised for the MacIntosh system in 1992. Although the primary version didn’t have audio, it was the best video scheme invented to that point. By 1993, the MAC program had multipoint capability, and in 1994, CU-SeeMe MAC was unfeigned video conferencing with audio. Recognizing the limitations of MAC compatibility in a Windows world, developers worked diligently to roll out the April 1994 CU-SeeME for Windows (no audio), followed almost by the audio version, CU-SeeMe v0.66b1 for Windows in August of 1995. In 1992, AT&T rolled out their own $1,500 video phone for the home market. It was a borderline success. That same year, the world’s initial MBone audio/video broadcast took place and in July INRIA’s video conferencing scheme was introduced. This is the year that saw the initial real explosion in video conferencing for businesses around the globe and in the end led to the standards developed by the ITU. International Telecommunications Union develops coding standards The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) begun fabricating standards for video conferencing coding in 1996, when they traditionalisti Standard H.263 to reduce bandwidth for transmission for low bit rate communication. Other standards were developed, including H.323 for packet-based multi-media communications. These are a potpourri of other telecommunications standards were revised and modified in 1998. In 1999, Standard MPEG-4 was devised by the Moving Picture Experts Group as an ISO ordinary for multimedia content. In 1993, VocalChat Novell IPX networks introduced their video conferencing system, but it was doomed from the commence and didn’t last. Microsoft in the end came on board the video conferencing bandwagon with NetMeeting, a descendent of PictureTel’s Liveshare Plus, in August of 1996 (although it didn’t have video in this release). By December of the same year, Microsoft NetMeeting v2.0b2 with video had been released. That same month, VocalTec’s Internet Phone v4.0 for Windows was introduced. VRVS links global exploration centers The Virtual Room Videoconferencing System (VRVS) project at Caltech-CERN kicked off in July of 1997. They formulated the VRVS specifically to provide video conferencing to researchers on the Large Hadron Collider Project and scientists in the High Energy and Nuclear Physics Community in the U.S. and Europe. It has been so successful that seed cash has been allotted for phase two, CalREN-2, to improve and exaggerate on the already in-place VRVS scheme in order to exaggerate it to partly include a broader geneticists, doctors, and a host of other scientists in the video conferencing network around the world. Cornell University’s development team freed CU-SeeMe v1.0 in 1998. This color video version was compatible with both Windows and MacIntosh, and big step forward in pc video conferencing. By May of that year, the team has moved on to other projects. In February of 1999, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) was launched by MMUSIC. The platform showed numerous vantages over H.323 that user cherished and soon made it almost as popular. 1999 was a very busy year, with NetMeeting v3.0b coming out, followed quickly by version three of the ITU ordinary H.323. Then came the release of iVisit v2.3b5 for both Windows and Mac, followed by Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP), version 1. In December, Microsoft freed a service pack for NetMeeting v3.01 (4.4.3388) and an ISO popular MPEG-4 version two was released. Finally, PSInet was the firstborn company to launch H.323 automated multipoint services. Like we said, 1999 was a very busy year. SIP entered version 1.30 in November of 2000, the same year that popular H.323 hit version 4, and Samsung freed their MPEG-4 streaming 3G video cell phone, the original of it is kind. It was a hit, peculiarly in Japan. Rather predictably, Microsoft NetMeeting had to release another service pack for version 3.01. In 2001, Windows XP messenger declared that it would now aid Session Initiation Protocol. This was the same year the world’s initial transatlantic tele-surgery took place utilizing video conferencing. In this instance, video conferencing was instrumental in permitting a surgeon in the U.S. to use a robot overseas to carry out gall bladder surgery on a patient. It was one of the most compelling non-business uses in the history of video conferencing, and brought the engineering to the attention of the medical profession and the ordinary public. In October of 2001, television reporters started out using a portable satellite and a videophone to broadcast live from Afghanistan for the duration of the war. It was the primary use of video conferencing engineering science to discourse live with video with an individual in a war zone, again bringing video conferencing to the forefront of people’s imaginations. Founded in December of 2001, the Joint Video Team finished basic exploration leading to ITU-T H.264 by December of 2002. This protocol standardized video compression technology for both MPEG-4 and ITU-T over a wide range of application areas, making it more versatile than it is predecessors. In March of 2003, the new engineering was ready for launch to the industry. New uses for video conferencing technologies 2003 also saw the rise in use of video conferencing for off-campus classrooms. Interactive classrooms became more frequent as the quality of streaming video increased and the delay decreased. Companies such as VBrick provided respective MPEG-4 systems to colleges all over the country. Desktop video conferencing is likewise on the rise and benefitting popularity. Companies newer to the market are now refining the details of performance in addition to the nuts and bolts of transmission. In April of 2004, Applied Global Technologies developed a voice-activated camera for use in video conferencing that tracks the voice of respective speakers in order to focus on whoever is speaking for the duration of a group discussion call. In March 2004, Linux declared the release of GnomeMeeting, an H.323 compliant, free video conferencing platform that is NetMeeting compatible. With the uninterrupted advances in video conferencing systems, it seems apparent that the engineering science will proceed to evolve and become an integral portion of business and personal life. As new advances are made and schemes become more somewhat priced, keep in mind that selections are still determined by network type, system requirements and what your peculiar conferencing needs are. As you know, speaker stands are ridiculously overpriced. These are reasonable.

Speaker wire can be completely hidden. The wire feeds through the stand and comes out the top for connection to your speakers. There is a cool little “U” shape on the front foot where the speaker wire comes out on the bottom. It keeps the speaker wire directed where you want it to be directed on the base. It’s a very well thought out design feature that I’ve not seen on other stands. With tile floors, it makes a big difference for me. It keeps the speaker wire directed under the sofa where I want it so it can’t be seen.

Now on to stability-

If you have hard flooring, you will be able to extend the stands all the way up if you screw the speakers to the bottom plate. The base is surprisingly stable and it has rubbery stuff on the bottom to keep it from sliding. If the stands will be on carpet, you may not be able to fully extend them unless you have small speakers. My son’s system has small speakers. They are back mounted to the stand with a screw and nut that fit inside a metal bracket that can be removed for screw mount. His speakers are on berber carpet. With his small lightweight speakers he is able to fully extend these with no wobble.

Shopping around I couldn’t find anything comparable to these for less than $50 a pair, and most ran closer to $75 a pair. Now the downside, I ordered two pairs of these stands for my front and rear satellite speakers. On one of the stands the indentation on the base for the logo sticker was stamped crooked and two of the clips that hold the bracket down had paint flaking off. The stamping error isn’t a big deal and you can’t notice unless you look at it close, and the flaking paint on the clips was quickly remedied with some Rustoleum paint. These are small problems, nothing that I mind too much, and certainly not worth detering you from buying these stands. Also, my speakers (Polk Audio RM6750) aren’t perfectly flat on all sides and don’t mount properly to the stands. The bracket had to be pulled back, and even then the speakers don’t sit perfectly flat on the base. But they feel secure enough and I’m not worried about them falling off or anything. Speakers that are more rectangular in shape would probably mount perfectly on these stands though. So just don’t expect the world with these stands, if you want something cheap that will hold your small speakers, these can’t be beat.

72 of 74 people found the following review helpful.
Some details
By Slarty Bartfast
First, the box comes with two stands. So ordering “1″ means you get a pair.

Second, mounting speakers: They have a small platform on top of the vertical riser, that has four holes in it that you can run screws into the bottoms of your speakers, if you want. The platform is about 2″X3″. Then, there’s a bracket of sorts that sticks out the back and runs up the back of your speaker, through which you can slot a bolt(included with washers) and that bolt would mount into the threaded thing on the back of your speakers, if you have one. They give you two thread sizes. The bracket runs about 5″ up the back, and is slotted the whole length, so no matter where your hole is, it should work. If they don’t include YOUR size bolt, just run to the hardware.

Now my logitech 5500′s did not have the bolt hole on the back, so I just used the double stick foam they included, and then zip tied the speaker base to the stand’s platform and voila. Very nice.

If they could have pulled out a better mounting scheme for MY particular speakers, I’d have given them a 5!!!

Enjoy.

Connelly
I purchased the IOGear 2 Port USB Cable KVM Switch with Audio and Mic GCS72U in order to use a Pc and a Macintosh Mini with one keyboard, monitor and mouse. The set up was easy. My only glitch was having to buy an inexpensive USB keyboard. There is no PS/2 port on this model. The model also worked with a Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse, but I wanted to use that set with my main work computer. Once set up I can switch easily between the Mac and the Pc with the press of a button. IOGear 2-Port MiniView Micro USB PLUS KVM Switch with Audio and 4 Cables GCS632U

I understand why it had so many positive reviews because it really was easy to setup and it works flawlessly. I wanted a 2 port KMV switch that would support my USB Keyboard and my USB Logitech cordless trackball mouse. Not only that but I wanted to make sure it would work with 2 laptops on different OS’s (XP + Win7) and one being in a docking station while the other stand alone. This product worked for my setup perfectly on the first try. Highly Recommended.

Thompson
Unlike KVM’s with PS2-type connectors, note that the computer doesn’t see anything attached to the USB connector when the KVM is switched over to the other computer. So if I’m actively using one PC and try to turn on the other PC, the booting system stops during POST and displays the “missing keyboard press F1″ POST message, requiring me to switch over to that one and press F1 in order to get it to finish booting. Also, each computer sees the keyboard and mouse as being USB-hot-plugged when switching (so much for “safely removing” USB devices).

Secondly, it would be nice if the KVM automatically selected the correct computer when only one computer is turned on. But instead you have to manually press the button to toggle the monitor from the computer that’s off to the computer that’s on. And as above, if you’re only turning on one PC and go to get a cup of coffee while it’s supposed to be booting, you might notice when you get back that the booting PC has stopped during POST and is prompting you to press F1 (if the KVM happened to be switched over to the other [powered off] PC). It seems like the KVM should be able to tell which PC is supplying USB power and switch automatically.

I’ll update my review with some video resolution tests shortly.

1. Unmatched Clarity, Security, and Longer Range

Panasonic KX-TG1033S DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Communications) 6.0 engineering science gives you the freedom to roam your home with crystal clear sound and longer range with minimum interference. DECT 6.0 protects you from eavesdropping with dandier security features. Your phone operates with a frequency range of 1.9GHz, which means your phone will not intercept wireless gadgets such as wireless routers, microwave ovens, wireless phones, or other miscellaneous wireless devices.

2. 1 Phone Jack, 6 Handsets

You may place handsets anyplace in your home. You do not need further and added handsets with each phone jack. No more wires and no more worries!

3. Fully Digital Answering System

Panasonic KX-TG1033S DECT 6.0 comes with a user friendly, commodious digital answering system. Who wouldn’t want to be competent to tell apart the caller on the other end of the line before picking up the phone? Plus, if you have caller ID, then you’ll know whether or not you will have to pick up the call. You may now stay on the line with an indispensable call and not get interrupted by somebody you’d rather not speak to at that time.

180 of 182 people found the following review helpful.
Excellent phones
By D. Matheny
I know that a lot of people are using their home phones less and less these days because of cell phones – but we still use ours a lot. Believe it or not, my wife was interviewed to be on the Oprah show a few years ago because of the amount of time she spends on the phone:). With her and the three kids competing for the phones, these end up getting a lot of hard use.

Anyway, the main problems we run into with phones are typically sound quality and durability.

With these DECT 6.0+ phones from Panasonic, the sound quality is truly as good as a corded phone. We live in a 3000 square foot, 2-story house and these phones easily cover that space as well as the yard. We never really take the handsets past the yard boundaries, so I don’t know what the maximum range is before these start breaking up. I’m also an early-adopter tech person; so our house is probably one of the most challenging environments a wireless phone could exist in.

This is the second set of DECT 6.0 phones we’ve had from Panasonic and the sound quality is head and shoulders above the wireless phones we’ve had from other manufacturers.

When it comes to features, here are the things we like about these:
1) The handsets have pocket clips that work well and stay attached to the phone for walking around.
2) There is a headset jack on the handsets, which is also great for walking around.
3) Panasonic has improved the caller ID and redial features from their previous generations – both features are now much easier to access.
4) I like that the lights on the handset tend to stay off in the base unit so we can sleep with the phone in its base.
5) These phones use standard NiMH AAA batteries, so they are easy to replace, or even to charge outside the phone if you want.
6) We use voicemail anyway, so I like that this particular phone does NOT include an answering machine. (I hate paying for a feature that we’ll never use.)
7) I love that we can pick up any handset and immediately join the call without having to do anything special to let a new caller join.
The handsets are a great size and shape – so they’re very easy to use. I can’t imagine wanting a home phone that is the size of a cell phone…

As far as durability goes, we’ve only had these for a couple of weeks now so it’s hard to know how long they will last. They do feel solid; and, based on the longevity of our last Panasonic phones, I’m expecting that they will last quite a while. In fact, the last Panasonic DECT 6.0 cordless phones we owned are the first phones we’ve ever had that have made it past a year without breaking – and they lasted more than two years! I’ve come to the conclusion that Panasonic phones are the only phones available that can be dropped repeatedly (including an occasional dunk in the sink or bounce off the tile) without completely dying.

Overall, if you’re looking for a high-quality phone that doesn’t have an answering machine, I think this phone should be at the top of your list. I won’t claim to have used every phone that is currently on the market; but we are extremely pleased with these!

[*** UPDATE 8/11/2011 ***]

Well, it looks like Panasonic did it again! We’ve had these phones for over a year now and they’re still going strong. Before you know it, we’re going to be expecting our phones to last longer than a year…

It works great for monitoring those seemingly-endless “on-hold” customer service calls while enabling you to do more than just wait until the understaffed customer service folks show up.
All in all, a great sounding phone!!

We’ve only had the phone a short time – it seems fine. So far, so good. We were, though, incredibly disappointed that it did not come with ‘talking caller ID’. The description plainly states that it’s one of its features and that was the deciding factor when we ordered this particular phone.

Had we not been desperate for new phones, we might have pursued a return, etc. I did contact both Amazon and Vanns to let them know of the misleading information in the description. As of today, though, the description still falsely states that it has ‘talking caller ID’. If you find this feature to be important, this is not the phone for you.
